Description	This 5 by 1.84 inch (12.7 by 4.67 cm) fifty-cent script note was issued by Ezra Griswold, owner of the Griwold Inn. "This Bill will be received in payment of any debt or redeemed in current Bank Notes, on demand, at my House in Worthington for Fifty Cents. Sept.23d 1816 Ezra Griswold" is written on the front of the note, and the back bears the notation "Ezra Getty No. 27." Since money was scarce, businessmen, such as Griswold, issued scrip in small denominations so that local business could be conducted. Griswold's inn served as a community center for the town of Worthington. It began as a double log cabin to provide shelter for new arrivals and persons passing through Worthington. In 1811, he built a substantial brick structure on the northeast corner of the public square. Travelers could purchase "plain fare", liquor, and board for their horses. The tavern served as an important meeting place for the community. During Worthington's first days, the town's only scales (stillyards) were housed at Griswold's. The upstairs of the building served as a ball or party room that hosted many gala functions. The inn was also the site of literary society meetings, justice of the peace hearings, dinner parties and the community post office.
