Description	This article in the Springfield News Sun focuses on Hattie Bunche, grandmother of mediator and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph Bunche. In the 1949 newspaper article, Hattie said that she would love to see Ralph again as he was the only grandson she had, and she had collected articles about him throughout her life. Frederick Bunche, Ralph Bunche's father, was 7 years old when he was adopted by Absalom and Hattie Bunche of Mt. Sterling, Ohio. Absalom and Hattie Bunche were both born in 1859 in Ross County, Ohio, married in about 1880 and moved to Mt. Sterling. Fred learned much from his foster family: farming and concrete contracting from Absalom, and religious training from Hattie. He became a barber and moved to Cleveland then to Detroit. Fred Bunche married Olive Johnson there, and their son Ralph was born in Detroit in 1904. As a small child Ralph would visit his 'grandmother' (Fred's foster mother, Hattie) in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Because of the distance between Detroit and Mechanicsburg, visits were few, but Fred did send Hattie a picture of Ralph at the age of 10 months that she kept until her death. Ralph's parents both died when he was still a child, and he moved with his grandmother, "Nana" Johnson, to Los Angeles, California. Hattie Bunche stated that it was Mrs. Johnson who motivated Ralph to get his education and inspired him to the highest achievements of his life. Ralph Bunche attended Harvard University, receiving his master's degree and doctorate. He maintained ties to education and the civil rights movement throughout his career with the federal government and the United Nations. He is best known for mediating between Arabs and Jews in Palestine from June 1947 to August 1949. He was at first the assistant mediator and then the head mediator. Bunche received the Springarn Prize from the NAACP (1949) and was the first American of color to receive the Nobel Peace Prize (1950).
