Description	This note was enclosed in The Hammer and the Scythe: Communist Russia Enters the Second Decade, the only book published by Pulitzer Prize winner Anne O'Hare McCormick during her lifetime. Part of the note reads, "it was in that library [at the St. Mary's Academy] that I first learned there was such a place as Russia and such a thing as Revolution." The note card measures 6.5" x 4.25" (16.51 x 10.80 cm) and is written on the front and back. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anne O'Hare McCormick (1880-1954) graduated as valedictorian from the Academy of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus, Ohio, in 1898. In 1910 she married Frank McCormick, a businessman from Dayton. Together they traveled overseas, and she began writing freelance, submitting stories to the New York Times. Eventually, Anne O'Hare McCormick earned her own column in the Times titled "Abroad" and during the years leading up to World War II she interviewed important personalities like Adolph Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In 1936, McCormick became the first woman appointed to the editorial board of the New York Times. A year later, in 1937, she was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Among other awards, she received the prestigious Laetare Award from the University of Notre Dame in 1944.

Full Text	Dear Mother Stephanie: I am sending by this post a copy of the book on Russia I was working on last spring. It has just come from the publishers, and one of the first copies must go to St. Mary's Library as one of the grandchildren of my old Alma Mater. It was in that library that I first learned there was such a place as Russia and such a thing as Revolution - so here's one of the ill effects of planting stray seeds of knowledge! I hope you'll some day find time to examine my brain child. No one's opinion of its merits and demerits
