,

hospital
,

pool
, and
physical
therapy
areas
. Also

of
patients
. This
publication
dates
from
around
1940
.

contains
22
pages
and

"
(26.67

cm)
.
Edgar
"
Daddy
"
Allen
(1862-1937)
was the
founder
of the
Society
for
Crippled
Children
, the
forerunner
of the
Easter
Seals
. He was a
wealthy
businessman
based
in
Elyria
,
Ohio
whose
son's
death
in a
streetcar
accident
in
1907
prompted
him to
take
an
interest
in
local
medical
facilities
.
Allen
raised
money
to
build
a
hospital
,
which
in
turn
brought
the
needs
of
children
with
orthopedic
problems
to his
attention
. He
is
credited
with the
formulation
of the "
Ohio
Plan
" a
strategy
to
aid
crippled
children
. He
presented
this
plan
to
countless
audiences
, with
addresses
titled
; "
Is
It
Worthwhile?
"
Allen
coined
the
phrase
"
Keep
on
keeping
on.
" He
led
the
organization
of the
International
Society
for
Crippled
Children
and was its
president
from its
inception
until
1934
.
While
volunteering
as
treasurer
of
Elyria
hospital
,
Allen
met
8-year-old
Jimmy
Bodak
,
brought
to the
hospital
in an
effort
to
help
straighten
his
legs
.
Jimmy
developed
affection
for
Allen
and
began
to
call
him by the
name
for
which
Allen
would
come
to be
known
, "
Daddy.
"
Allen
became
aware
of the
magnitude
of the
need
for a
facility
for
crippled
children
.
Through
his
fund
raising
efforts
enough
money
was
raised
, and
Gates
Hospital
for
Crippled
Children
was
opened
on
April
15
,
1915
.
It
was the
first
facility
of its
kind
in the
nation
,
dedicated
to
serving
the
children
with
special
needs
. By
speaking
to
church
groups
,
civic
groups
and
parents
,
Allen
and the
hospital
social
workers
persuaded
many
parents
to
send
their
children
to
Gates
,
many
for
extended
stays
of
two
to
three
years
.
