Description	These four photographs document the inauguration of Dr. Arthur Sherwood Flemming as Ohio Wesleyan University president in 1948. The first photograph shows former president Herbert Hoover seated with Flemming, while the second shows Hoover speaking at the inauguration ceremony. The third photograph shows Hoover with Flemming's children, Elizabeth, Thomas, Arthur, and Harry. Flemming and outgoing Ohio Wesleyan president Bishop Herbert Welch are shown in the final photograph. The photographs measure between 2.25 x 3.25" (5.72 x 8.26 cm) and 7.5" x 9.5" (19.05 x 24.13 cm). Flemming (1905-1996), Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) graduate of 1927, was the university's first president to be an alumnus and a layman (non-ordained minister). Having served in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, his inauguration at the June commencement of 1949 drew many famous speakers and celebrities. Flemming served Ohio Wesleyan as president from 1948-1958, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (1958-1961) and later commissioner on civil rights (1974-1981). He also served as director of the Office of Defense Mobilization at the end of the Korean War, served the labor department, Atomic Energy Commission and the Peace Corps. In 1994 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award to a civilian. As an active Methodist layman, he headed the National Council of Churches of Christ in America. In 1982 Ohio Wesleyan University awarded Dr. Flemming the Distinguished Achievement Citation citing him as "champion of civil rights and specialist on problems of aging."
