Fort Washington Novr 14th 1791
Dear Sir
I was honored with your letter by Captn
Bush, which I did not receive until about a week
ago when I returned from my unfortunate expedition.
It will always give me pleasure to hear from you-
Sir and to attend to any recommendation you may
be pleased to make.
No doubt the news of our misfortune will
have reached you long before this can, and tho it is
truly a serious misfortune reports will have aggravated
it-full one half of my little army were killed and
wounded and a much greater proportion of officers;
and that loss has fallen hard upon the second
Regiment-all of whom [inserted: that is of the officers] except [illeg.], who were
in the action fell-among those were Major [illeg.] and
several others from your state--who were advanced
about ninety miles, and we still retain sixty of
them nothwithstanding, and it is not improbable that
this winter yet, all our loss, that is recoverable, may be
recovered
