Description
The
ceremony
to
lay
the
cornerstone
for the
new
Intermediate
Penitentiary
in
Mansfield
,
Ohio
was
held
on
November
4
,
1886
. The
festivities
included
a
parade
through
downtown
Mansfield
, and an
estimated
15,000
people
were on
hand
for the
ceremony
. This
lithograph
was
probably
produced
as a
souvenir
for the
laying
of the
cornerstone
in
1886
.
It
is
5.7
x
3.5(14.5
x
9
cm)
. This
item
is
part
of a
larger
collection
of
materials
placed
in the
cornerstone
of the
Mansfield
Reformatory
.
Items
placed
in the
cornerstone
are
very
diverse
, and
represent
Ohio
history
,
public
works
, and
business
, as
well
as
various
newspapers
from
Ohio
and the
nation
.
Only
the
items
relating
to the
Reformatory
are
included
in
Ohio
Memory
. In
1884
the
Ohio
state
legislature
approved
the
creation
of a
prison
to
serve
as an
intermediate
step
between
the
Boys
'
Industrial
School
in
Lancaster
and the
Ohio
Penitentiary
in
Columbus
.
Citizens
of
Mansfield
,
led
by
General
Roeliff
Brinkerhoff
,
lobbied
for the
prison
to be
located
at
Mansfield
. The
city
was
selected
, and
it
set
to
work
raising
$10,000
to
purchase
30
acres
of
land
for the
site
of the
prison
. The
state
purchased
an
additional
150
acres
for
$20,000
, and
hired
Cleveland
architect
Levi
T
.
Scofield
(1847-1917)
to
design
the
prison
.
When
he was
hired
to
design
the
prison
in
1885
,
Scofield
had
already
designed
the
asylums
for the
insane
at
Athens
(1868)
and
Columbus
(1869)
, as
well
as
Cleveland's
Central
High
School
(1878)
, and
private
residences
such
as the
R.K
.
Winslow
house
(1878)
on
Euclid
Avenue
. The
Intermediate
Penitentiary
officially
opened
on
November
17
,
1896
,
when
150
prisoners
were
transferred
from the
Ohio
Penitentiary
.
Crowds
lined
the
route
from
Columbus
to
Mansfield
, and the
RichlandeShield
and
Banner
ran
the
headline
Mansfield's
Greatest
Day
. In
1891
the
Intermediate
Penitentiary
was
changed
to the
Ohio
State
Reformatory
. The
name
was
changed
to
Mansfield
Reformatory
in
1996
to
reflect
its
significance
to the
Mansfield
community
.
