Description	In 1898, Adella Prentiss Hughes enlisted four well-known vocalists of the day (David Bispham, Marguerite Hall, Estelle Ford, and Mackenzie Gordon) to perform Liza Lehman's song cycle In a Persian Garden. The concert was held at Association Hall in Cleveland's Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) building at the corner of Prospect and Erie (now E. 9th Streets). The program lists the musicians and other details of the concert, including the general admission charge of $1.00. It measures 5" x 8" (12.7 x 20.3 cm). The March 12, 1898 performance marked the first public concert presented by Adella Prentiss Hughes, who later became known as Cleveland's impresario. In the audience at this concert were a number of prominent Cleveland citizens, including D.Z. Norton, co-founder of Oglebay Norton Company and the first president of the Musical Arts Association (MAA), the parent organization of the Cleveland Orchestra. John Long Severance, the second president of the MAA and chief donor to the music hall that bears his family's name, was also present. Over the next two decades Hughes went on to bring many of the country's leading orchestras and soloists to Cleveland. Her ultimate goal of bringing music to the community found full fruition first in her formation of the Musicial Arts Association in 1915, and then in her founding of the Cleveland Orchestra in 1918. This item is part of a larger collection of the Adella Prentiss Hughes Papers. Three items from the collection are included in Ohio Memory. The Concert Program and the Photograph of Adella Prentiss Hughes with Performers relate to the first public performance organized by Hughes. The concert was held on March 12, 1898. The Hall Rental Contract is for another performance held on the evening of October 1, 1898.
