Earnestness.
BY W. 8. MARSHALL.
The cause of the success or failure of almost every man, in life, may ho found in answer to tho question, How earnest is he?, Earnestness is tho great key to knowledge, to goodnes.^j, to Ecaven. It accomplishes objects seemingly impo>sible. Earnestness gives ell'ect to the sermons of our ministers, it has made our great men what they aro; it has made America what she is. It is characterized in all God's workif. Cast your eye over the universe, and you will iind that care¬ lessness exists only among the works of men. ThohO of God will show marks of piirpoec, and of plan. H God is earnest, certainly we should be so too.. Our minds aregivort us toex- >3rttisp, i^pd vc sfjojild n.ot be lieetMess of the, value of tho gift of our reason, hut wo should seek to use it to our best iinprovcnient, and the pleasure of tho giver. Tho minds of men aro prone to wander, instead of which all should have a fixed object, viz : to do good, and to get to Heaven. I^o accoinjilisli tlii-i, we should earnestly study God's law, and endeavor to find tho. surest means of doing thib, and then j,pplying ourselves zealously to our task. Zeal, combined with well directed means, is certain of procuring tho desired result.
To be convinced of this, you have hut to observe the movements of man- kiud in general. Hero wo see a
mitting the golden moments—which I are eo precious that we arc allowed j tho use of only one at a time—^^to glido I by unimproved, or occupied in some 1 vain and useless nmusement. , I
If men could but realize'the awfu( ' solemnity which will pervade tho Judgment Day, and know tho dreadful consequences which must inevitably follow thoir present carelessness and unconcern, they would certainly bo awakened to thO ucccssityof working while 'tis time.
¦ And if work at all, why not work for something of weight to us in eter¬ nity? Men will laboV hard for thai 'which is not meat, and siitisficth not,' j but if informed of the danger of their souls, are entirely untiouccmed- This is surely inconsistent. Why 'ntit bo reasonable? Why not linten to One ¦ who loves all, aud who bays,, "Seek; first the Kingdom of God and h\k i righteousness, and all these thiugg,, shall be added unto you." Wo all love the approbation of tho good; then why not seek God's ])0wer, by apply¬ ing oursolvrs ardently to tho work '. which he has given us to dr^? '^ \

The conclnsioii is irre^istabie. that if Adam was made an. Apobtate by tho violation of tho laws of.-God; my good Brother can become also an Apostate in tho same way, to wit: by violating the laws'oi' God; and my dt»r Brother will not say that he is belter than his progenitor (Adam,) as ho. came from Ihe'pristino h.and of Deity.
