Description	Included here are the constitution and the minutes of the October 28 and November 24, 1896 meetings of the Followers of Pallas Athena (F.P.A.), a study club organized by the women of Wadsworth, Ohio. The F.P.A. had no regional or national ties and was one of the many self-help, education, and social clubs organized in cites and towns across the country during the latter part of the 19th century. Although only selections are included here, the complete volume is approximately 65 pages and measures 6.5" x 9" (16.51 x 22.86 cm). <p> The F.P.A. met once or twice each month, October through March, in members' homes. One member was responsible for presenting a paper on a particular subject; other members provided related musical or literary entertainment. For many years, members picked a topic or theme to discuss during the season, such as "International Personages" "Spain" and "Travel." All presentations and entertainment then related to the topic. <p> This item is part of a larger collection of materials relating to the Followers of Pallas Athena. It includes minute books covering meetings for all but four years between 1896 and 1980. It also includes a complete set of annual program books, which list the scheduled presentations and entertainment for each meeting as well as names of officers, and members.

Full Text	[page 1] Oct. 28/ 1896 - A circle of ladies gathered at the house of Mrs. C. A. Curtis, Mon. Eve., Oct. 28/ 96 - for the purpose of organizing a Literary Club. Mrs. M. C. Lytle was chosen chairman. Meeting was called to order, and election of offi-cers followed which resulted as follows: - Pres. - Mrs. M. C. Lytle, V. Pres. Mrs. C. A. Curtis, Sec. & Treas. - Helen Andrews The Pres. appointed the fol-lowing committees: - Executive: - Mrs. Chas. Donnley. Mrs. L. T. Boyer. Mrs. F. W. Boyer Com. on Name: - Miss Walker, Mrs. C. A. Curtis & Mrs. F. W. Boyer [ page 2] Com. to solicit new members: Mrs. C. A. Curtis, Mrs. Jerro Parnelee, Ethel B. Goss. Ex. Com. announced the pro-gram for the next meeting, as follows: - Reading, Mrs. J. H. Durling Paper, Am. Authors - Mrs. C. A. Curtis Current Events, Helen Andrews Music, Besse Geib. Adjourned to meet with Mrs. Chas. Donnley Mon. Eve., Nov. 9/ 96 - at 7: 30. Mrs. M. C. Lytle, Pres. Helen Andrews, Secy. Owing to conflictin [ page 3] Nov. 9th/ 1896- Club met with Mrs. Donnley. Meeting called to order by Pres. called to act as Secy. pro. tem in absence of the Secy. Roll was called - responded to with quotations. The program as announced two weeks previous, was carried out with the exception of the " Current Events". The leader, Miss Andrews, being absent. Com. on name reported. It was decided to accept the name " Pallas Athene." Moved and carried that we be known to the public as the F. P. A. Club, with the owl [ underlined] as our symbol. Mrs. N. S. Everhard, Mrs. C. A. Curtis, [ page 4] and Mrs. G. H. Wuchter were appointed to draft a consti-tution, and report at next meeting. Moved and carried that we charge a member-ship fee of 25 c per year. It was decided, by vote, that [ carrot mark] the names of [ written above carrot mark] all ladies already asked to join the Club, be voted upon. Mrs. Plank, Mrs. Everhard & Mrs. Wuchter were appointed to see the trustees of the G. A. R. abaout renting their Hall, and also to secure place for meeting. After reading of program for next meeting, Club ad-journed to meet with Mrs. T. M. Plank, Mon. Eve. Nov. 23. Helen Andrews, Secy. Owing to circumstances, twice was later changed to Nov. 24/ 96 and the place ofmeeting to Mrs. Swisher. [ page 5] Nov. 24th/ 96. Meeting called to order by the Pres. at the house of Mrs. W. J. Swisher. Minutes of the previous meeting wer read and accepted. Roll was called - responded to with quotations. Program, as previously assigned was carried out as follows: - Recitation Carrie Hilliard. Paper, " Thanksgiving" - Bertha Curtis Reading Mrs. N. S. Everhard. The Com. on constitution pre-sented a form which was approved and accepted. The Com. on room reported and Club decided not to rent a room until the first of the new year. In the mean-time to meet at the house of some member. The names [ page 6] of Mrs. S. C. Goss and Mrs. J. B. Hilliard were presented for membership, & accepted. Progrm for the next meeting was read. Miss Andrews tendered her resignation as Secy & same was accepted. Ethel B. Goss was elected to fill the vacancy. Club adjourned to meet at the house of Miss Clif-ford, Mon. Eve. Dec. 7/ 96. Club ( Followers X of Pallas Athene) and its symbol shall be the owl. II. - The object of this society is for the study of polite lit- X erature in a social manner. III. - The officers of this Soc. shall consist of President, Vice Pres., and Secy. & Treas. in X one, and an Executive Com. appointed by the President. IV. - The Pres. must preside at all meetings and act X as chairman of the Execu-tive board. The Sec. & Treas. shall take [ page 8] the minutes of all meet-ings, attend to all notices, and take charge of the money belonging to the Society. The Executive Com. shall arrange the programs, & find place for meeting. V - Sec. I. - The officers of this Society shall be + elected by ballot, for a term of one year. Sec. II. - The club shall be-gin its work for the year, upon the first Monday in October, and shall meet bi- weekly until the last Monday in April, at which meet- [ page 9] ing the election of officers shall take place. VI. - Any person may be-come a member of this Club by a vote of the Society by signing the constitution and by paying the yearly membership fee of twenty-five cents.
