About this collection

During the summer of 1917, the Ohio Board of Library Commissioners conducted a summer library school.  Housed at the Ohio State University Library and directed by the State Department of Library Organization, the library school provided tuition-free training for the staff of smaller libraries who did not have formal education in library science.  A diverse group of students from every corner of Ohio participated in the 1917 program.  A second summer library school, planned for the summer of 1918, was cancelled due to the country's involvement in World War I.

The Ohio State Summer Library School Collection consists of a variety of materials pertaining to the 1917 summer library school and plans for the 1918 school.  Materials include student record (report) cards, student rosters, applications, course outlines, brochures, lists of expenditures, and correspondence between various potential students, faculty, library organizations, Mr. J. Howard Dice (Library Organizer), and Mr. Charles B. Galbreath (State Librarian).
