About this collection

John Sherman [1823-1900], brother of United States General William T. Sherman, was a prominent political figure in the 19th century, serving not only in the United States Senate but also as Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury and working as a leader in the early days of the Republican party.

While the bulk of Sherman's papers are held elsewhere (such as the Ohio Historical Center and the Library of Congress), the State Library of Ohio was presented with the bulk of his print library and a small collection of his manuscript materials in 1941. This online collection represents the manuscript materials included in that collection. Also included is Sherman's own catalog of books in his possession, the vast majority of which are still held by the State Library of Ohio.
