She was one o f t h e 818 c h a r t e r members o f t h e Daughters o f t h e American R e v o l u t i o n i n 1891, a s u f f r a g i s t , and a d e l e g a t e t o t h e Women's I n t e r - n a t i o n a l Congress I n Rome i n 1914. She i n t e r v i e w e d M u s s o l i n i ( 1924, 1927, 1934), Benes, Masaryk, and o t h e r w o r l d l e a d e r s and t h e French government awarded her t h e Reconnaissance F r a n c a i s e medal i n g r a t e f u l r e c o g n i t i o n o f her s e r v i c e s t o t h e war e f f o r t i n World War I. H i l l i a m R i & m . . & ( 1819- 1899) a t t e n d e d Kenyon C o l l e g e from 1835 t o 1838, a t t e n d e d Yale Law School f r o m 1841 t o 1842. and was a d m i t t e d t o t h e O h i o B a r i n 1842. On October 16, 1844, he m a r r i e d Helen M. R a l s t o n o f L o c k p o r t , New York. They had f o u r c h i l d r e n : W i l l i a m J r . F r a n c i s , Mary, and Janet ( see above). Janet, however, was t h e o n l y c h i l d t o s u r v i v e p a s t age t w e n t y - two. From 1847 t o 1852 R i c h a r d s r a n a Whig newspaper, t h e - ( O h i o ) G a z e t t e , a l o n g w i t h George P. Conrad. He a l s o was p o s t - master a t Newark from 1851 t o 1853. I n A p r i 1 1854 he moved t o Keokuk, Iowa, and j o i n e d h i s b r o t h e r - i n - l a w , James 8. Howel l r I n e d i t i n g and pub1 i s h i n g Jhe Gate C i t y , a d a i l y Repubi i c a n news-paper. I n September 1862, R i c h a r d s moved t o Washington, D. C., where he worked f o r t h e Department o f t h e I n t e r n a l Revenue. From May 1869 t o J u l y 1880 he p r a c t i c e d law w i t h t h e f i r m o f Chipman, Hosmer & Co. He t h e n s p e n t two years as a c l e r k i n t h e T r e a s u r y Department.
