High St al ISth—1 Hadassah Welcomes FDR, Jr. Tomonow Senior Hadassah's "big moment" is Just a few hours awayl Tomorrow evening at 6:30, In the main ballroom of the Neil House, the chapter launches Its third decade of Donor Dlniiers, and this, the 21st annual. Is expected to surpass the 20 previous successes which Hadassah has proudly presentetl. This magnificent occasion is a tribute not only t'o Hadassah's tireless workers who've had such a big hand in the preparation of the 1940 Donor Dinner', but to the entire local Jewish communi¬ ty as well. The public once again has responded generqusly to the call for funds to carry on Hadassah's expanded humahitarian program. The reputation of the distinguished guest speaker tomorrow evening—the eminent Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr.—has stimulated a record peak of Interest and zeal throughout the community. Statesman Roosevelt Is one of an Impressive list of prominent guests to appear at Hadassah's Donor Dinners—a list which has included such outstanding personalities as Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, H. V, Kaltenborn, Dr. A. L. Sacher, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, Pierre Van Paassen, Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebraan, Branch Rickey, Eddie Cantor, Joe E. Brown, Quentln Reynolds, Dr. Louis Finkel¬ stein, Rabbi Solomon Goldman, and, the mother of tomorrow's honored guest—Eleanor Roosevelt Mrs. Herbert Llnlck, chairman for the affair, announces that dinner will be served at 6 o'clock and that Mr. Roosevelt will speak Mr. Roosevelt promptly at 8. Persons attending are reminded to bring tickets mailed to them. The program wll) start with the audience singing the national anthem and Hatikvah, with Mrs. Max Zlsklnd at the piano. Mrs. ? Through its Medical Organiza¬ tion, Hadassah helps guard the health of Israel. It's Vocational Education Division plays an Indispensable role'in the development of a skilled citizenry. Through Child Welfare work, Hadassah helps create a healthy, happy youth. Through the Youth Allyab, chlidren are rescued. The Jewish National Fund is responsible for the lifel')lood of nationhood—land! And Hadas.sah teaches the future doctors and nurses of Israel through Its medical univer¬ sity. Margulis in 23rd Year for Newsies Chas. B. Margulis There's a human dynamo, nam¬ ed Charles B. Margulis pacing the 1949 drive of the Charity Newsies. Hard-working, smiling, friend¬ ly and proud of hla assignment, Mr. Margulis has been at work for many weeks preparing de¬ tails of the traditional sale of red-heart newspapers that will climax in the street campaign Dec 17. A member of the Tifereth Is¬ rael Temple, B'nai B'rith Lodge, Excelsior Club and other Jewish groups, he yields to no one In his enthusiasm for work with the Newsies. Lazarus Sister¬ hood in the vestry room of Bry¬ den Rd. Temple. Mr. Johnson will conduct an audience-parti¬ cipation contest, following a brief business meeting which Is to Include a report of the recent convention of temple sister¬ hoods. The opening prayer will be given by Mrs. Leonard Stern. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the contest Also In¬ cluded on the afternoon's pro¬ gram will be a short film—"One God"—a thought-provoking pre¬ sentation of timely Importance. The critical need for removing to Israel large numbers of Jews trom danger points in North Africa and the Near East moved the 1,600 delegates to call for Self-sacrlfIce on the part of local Jewish communities, and for the mobilization of maximum funds. The resolution on the require¬ ments for 1950 called upon American Jews to contribute to the United Jewish Appeal this coming year on "a scale com- men.surate with the 'minimum needs of Its constituent agen¬ cies— the Joint Distribution Committee, the.United Palestine Appeal and United Service for New Americans." Another resolution expressed "distress at the fact that almost 100,000 Jews remain unhoused In Israel" and that "impelling forces make it urgent that addl- (Contlnned OD PmKe 41 RICHARD ABEL, RALPH LAZARUS ATTEND UNITEBJEWtSH APPEAL CONFERENCE IN ATLANTIC CITY Ralph Lazarus, who recently assumed the presidency of the United Jewish Fund of Columbus, and Richard J. Abel attended the Conference of the United Jewish Appeal in Atlantic City over the week-end of Nov. 26. Mr. Abel was the representative of the UJF of Columbus on the Resolutions Committee and, with Mr. Lazarus, participated In the discussions. A report of the proceed¬ ings of the Conference sessions will be made to 'the Board of Dir¬ ectors of the United Jewish Fund, at its forthcoming meeting. Both Mr. Abel and Mr. Lazar¬ us fell that they had gained a clearer understanding of the needs of the agencies represent¬ ed in the United Jewish Appeal and expressed satisfaction at having attended the Conference. Mr. Lazarus said that subse¬ quent to the meeting of the Board of Directors of the United Jewish Fund, a statement would appear in the Chronicle report¬ ing the results of the 1949 cam¬ paign of the United Jewish Fund and also a detailed accounting of the distribution of the funds subscribed to the cdmpaign. B'nai B'rith to Initiate 150 Members One hundred and' fifty new members will be Inducted Into B'nai B'rith in an Impressive ceremony Tuesday night, 8:15, at Broad St. Temple. Brooks of S. Foun- Annual Chanuloh Candle-Light Service at Bryden Road Temple Next Friday Evening Rabbi Jerome D. Folkman has announced that the 3rd annual Chanukah candle-light service at Bryden Rd. Temple, featuring Mrs. Allen Gundershelmer, Jr., harpist, will be held at the Tem¬ ple next Friday evening. The service consists of Psalms of David, read by Rabbi Folkman, to the accompaniment of Mrs, Gundersheimeir at the harp. The service will be aupportetl, as us¬ ual, by the Bryden Rd. Temple choir under the direction of Jerry Grodin, with Carl Burr at the organ, . ^ The Temple will- be Uliuninated by candle-light until the Chanu¬ kah candles are kindled with the traditional benediction chanted by- Rabbi Fblkmari. Then the en¬ tire Temple Will be illuminated. Rabbi Folkman will preach on "A Jew At Heart." Chanukah will begin with the kindling of the first light next Thursday evening. Cantor Katz Is tamed for his "El Mule Rochamim" (prayer for the ^ead) which he chanted ull night long In a concentration camp after 2,000 of his fellt^w Jews were massacred.
