Sport and SportBmanahip Helen Wills Moody, who lost Iier Differences Forgotten as Jews and Christians Fight Polish Flood BiaiLIN (WNS)—Since the recent hloodslicd in Germany revealed to the German people something of the true na¬ ture of the Nazi regime, new and coura¬ geous sentiments widely at variance with Hitlerite dogmas and philosophy arc find¬ ing frequent expression in public. The most recent. example of this tendency was the verdict of a Berlin district court which in acquitting Dr. Heinrich Hirt- sicfer, one of the outstanding Catholic politicians of the pre-Nazi era; declared that "however opinions may differ con- -nlng personalities, the accused enloy the same rights before the law as any others." Dr. Hirtsiefer was minister of public welfare In Prussia. The.court's dcci.sion, handed down by Judge Hoepke, also criticized the Nazi press for antici¬ pating a verdict of guilty. Alinost at the same time that the court was defying Hitler by freeing one of his most noted political foes. Mayor Quirin WARSAW (WNS)—All differences between Jews and non-Jews have been temporarily forgotten as every clement of the population Is being mobilized to meet the catastrophic flood of the Vistula River, the greatest disaster in Poland's history. Thousands of men are working feverishly to strengthen the dikes in or der to prevent the raging waters from in^ undating Warsaw as they have already flooded the suburbs and scores of towns and cities in Western Galicia. Prelim¬ inary estimates set the property damage at $200,000,000 and the loss of life at UOO. Dozens of hamlets inhabited al¬ most exclusively by Jews have been com¬ pletely washed away and the Jewish com¬ munity is making heroic efforts to pro¬ vide for the tens of thousands of refugees who arc pouring into Warsavi; panic- stricken,, homeless and bankrupt. The magnitude of the disaster is so great that non-sectarian relief committees are being Employment of Non-Jewish Labor in Jewish-Owned Enterprises in Pal- estiiie Grows Jansen, chief executive of-Aachen, told an asscriibly of 100,000 members ot fhe Hitler I ^^^ ^P- Youth Organization that "the youngest I soldiers Of the Third Reich know no dif-' President of Local Chapter ferences of.cast^ or creed and recognize(, daffies Worlt of HadaSSah only one comnltirtity. tliat of the German i . p-eople." ^ , ¦ . ,,.! , Mrs. B-. The decision of Judge Hoepke and Mayor Jansen's stressing of creedal equality emphasize the increasing ¦ spirit of independence being manifested. Shortly before these two incidents the German supreme court at Lqlpzig had emphati¬ cally refused to grant a divorce to a Ger¬ man from his Jewish wife on the ground Jhat Je\vish blood was no cause for di¬ vorce, thus defying the Nazi race philoso¬ phy. Vandals Destroy Hundreds of Prayer Books and Threaten to Bum Synagogue NEW YORK (WNS)—Police are 'scouring the city for the band of anti- Semitic .vandals who broke into Temple Anshe Chesed and destroyed hundreds of prayer books, a dozen; praying ¦ shawls and scores of pews and left a note threat¬ ening to burn the synagogue down. The note said: "Listen, you damn Jews. Tf you don't get more money in this place, I'll burn it down. The Mechal." Police believe the vandals are religious fanatics or. a gang of hoodlums. Synagogue offi' cials, however, fear that the note is the work of the same band that smeared swastikas and crosses on the walls'of Temple Emanu-El last, iyear. These extra certificates are not an advance oh the labor immigration schedule for the next six months. This is the first time since 1920 that such an additional grant has been made. The newly issued certifi¬ cates will be allotted as follows:. OCO for agricultural workers; 465 for industrial workers; and 75 to be held in reserve. LONDON (WNS)~Employment of non-Jewish labor in Jewish agricultural and industrial undertakings in all parts of Palestine is growing at an alarming rate, figures published in the July-Aug¬ ust issue of The New Judea, oflicial organ of the World Zionist Organization, re¬ veal. It is pointed out that while the total planted area of Jewish land in Pales¬ tine increased from 43,000 dunams in 1930 to M0,00O dunams today, the number of Jewish workers employed on the land is now only between 4,000 and 5,000, or less than it was three years ago, while Arab labor in the same area increased by many thousands. The New Judea declares that there are -,70,000 dunams In Petach-Tikvah, RLshon- iLe-ZIon, Ness-ZIona, Rehoboth, Ekron, IGedera and Benyamlna on which Jewish labor is almost unknown. According to the New Judea, Jewish labor is regularly employed only on 40,000 dunams in the Sharon, Pardess-Hanna, Vadl-RIsikt, Karkur and some parts of Judea and the Shomrom. Even in the Sharon, the New Judea asserts, "some greedy orange planters there are opening the door to non-Jewish labor just because it is much cheaper." A similar situation is developing in the cities, the New Judea notes. Tel Aviv h introclucirtg-hundreds of Arab workers into its transportation and building trades, factories arid workships. In Tel Aviv arid its-suburbs there are some 1,500 Arab workers employed. In Haifa 50f) Arabs, have. replaced Jewish workers, while in Jerusalem there are Jewish quarters that ;are completely shut to Jewish workers. Of 3,000 workers employed in the porta of Jaffe and Haifa only 200 are Jews. WARNING! A few months ago the Chron¬ icle notified the Jewish people of Columbus and Central Ohio of a racketeer who was soliciting so- called subscriptions or contribu¬ tions on behalf of The Brooklyn Examiner of N. Y. Most of the Jewish newspapers thruout the country have investigated these solicitations and found them fraudulent. A solicitor is back in this city again representing the above publication. His selling point is that the money you give him will go towards a fund to aid the stricken Jews of Germany. Don't l»Q^|pial«*d! Do not con¬ tribute before you investigate. In fact, notify the office of the Chronicle at once. Prosecution will face the gentleman from Brooklyn when caught. Ldlserson Named Head of Railway Mediation Board WASHINGTON (WNS)-Dr. Wil liam Leiserson, until recently chairman of the Petroleum Policy Labor Board, has been named head of the newly created National Railway Mediation, Board in a cable message from President Roosevelt, who is on his way to Hawaii, Born In Esthonia 51 years ago, Dr, Leiserson is widely known as a labor expert. Dr. Leiserson has also been professor of eco¬ nomics at Toledo University and Antioch College, chief of the division of labor ad¬ ministration in the Departnient of I-abor and chairman of the labor adjustment board of the clothing industry la Roches¬ ter. JERUSALEM (WNS)—The most sensational case in recent Jewish history came to a dramatic ending when the Palestine court of appeals acquitted Abra¬ ham Stavsky, youthful Zionist Revision¬ ist and Polish citizen, of the nmrder of Dr. Chaim Arlosoroff, who was mysterl ously :shot on June 16, 1933, thus revers ing the verdict of the trial court which had sentenced Stavsky to hang. The court of appeal's decision, a complete sur prise to almost everyone connected with the case, is being hailed with complete satisfaction by every element of Pales¬ tinian Jewry because it is expected that Stavsky's vindication will do much to end the internecine struggle In Zionism. Stavsky had become the symbol for strife and violence in Jewish Palestine and in the Diaspora between Revisionists and Laborites, the latter. maintaining that Stavsky was guilty and the former hold¬ ing that he was the victim of a frame-up. The decision of the court of appeals was unexpected Jiecause during the hearing on the appeal the judges had declined to hear testimony from new witnesses and re¬ fused, to admit iti evidence important docu¬ ments presented by Horace Samuel, Stavsky's counsel. The hearing on the appeal began July IG and continued for two days. The court of appeals con¬ sisted of Chief Justice Sir Michael F. J. MacDonald, and Justices Francis Horace Baker and Julian Mignon de Freitas. On the eve of tlie opening of the appeal the court refused to. accept an affidavit signed by Abdul Medjid, an Arab convict, con¬ fessing that he had murdered Arlosoroff, who was shot while walking on the Tel Aviv seashore with his wife. Medjid had previously admitted the murder, only to repudiate his confession.. Stavsky was orte of three Revisionists who went on trial for the murder,of April 23, the others being Zvi Rosenblatt and Aba Achimeir. The latter was acquitted on May IG for lack of evidence. On June 8 the trial court found Stavsky guilty and acquitted Rosenblatt for lack of evi¬ dence. The conviction of Stavsky pre¬ cipitated a world-wide controversy, split¬ ting Jewry into two camps. Max J. Kohler, Outstanding Historian and Commimal Leader, Dies NEW YORK (WNS)~Max James Kohler. American Jewry's outstanding historian and leading expert on immigra¬ tion problems and legislation, died sud¬ denly of a heart attack in the Adirondack mountains, where he had gone to spend his vacation. He was the son of the late Dr. Kaufman Kohler, for 23 years president of the , Hebrew Union College, ami a grandson of David Einhorn, a pioneer of Reform Judaism. Born in Detroit, Kohler was educated, in New York, A generation ago he. was an assistant U, S. District At¬ torney. Kohler's scholarly and autliorltativc his- . torlcal studies on various phases of Amer¬ ican Jewish history, his voluminous and convincing briefs on immigration prob¬ lems and his lucid aiid practical advice on all phases of Jewish life made him one of the commanding figures of American Jewry, hut his modesty and retiring na¬ ture kept him from the limelight. He played a major role In the negotiations that led to the abrogation of the Russo- American Commercial Treaty in 1912, and was also instrumental in having the present Roosevelt administration modify the inmiigration regulations to facilitate the admittance of German refugees. . A bibliography of Kohler's writings would fill a hiige volume. He was a painstaking and prominent historian. He wrote scores of papers for the American Jewish Historical Society, of which, he was a vice-president. He served as hon- ora ry secret ary of the National Com- mltCfee on the Celebration of the 25bth . Chris¬ tians. ¦ ''¦''..¦•¦ As a lawyer and a Jewish leader he frequently appeared before Congressional committees to plead for liberal.legislation, and his work in this respect is regarded, as being responsible for the modification of some of the more rigorous provisions^ of the quota laws. He also wrote ex^ tensively bn Jewish minority rights, on which he was an International authcfrity-, Nine years ago he received an honorary degree from the Hebrew Union College. As a communal leader he never hesitated to speak his mind at the risk of unpopu¬ larity. ' Several years ago he publicly de-. nounced the extravagant claims made in behalf of Haym Salomon and opposed plans to erect a monument in his honor. Yet it was Kohler who first unearthed much of the material deahng with Salo¬ mon. Kohler appeared in many promi¬ nent legal cases, and was the attorney for the late Nathan Straus.
