EDirOlUAL- Thc National Conference for l'i\Icstinc, ^summoned by the United I'alcstine Appeal and having the participation of the forty- two outstanding nation.al .leivish orRani^.ations of America, met at Washington, I>. C, during the past week-end nnd emerged with a. scries of decisions that reflects honor upon thc seriousness of American .Tewish communal leaders and that promises much for the solution of the problem of Jewish homclessness—that is, if money willback up words. Thc princip.'U action of thc Conference was to raise the quota of the United Palestine Appeal from S2,.500,()00 to ,$,'{,500,000 at thc cabled request of the .Tewish Agency for Palestine, which iminted out that it was completely unable to cope with thc tre¬ mendous pressure exerted by ,Tews in many Lands clamoring for admission to Palestine. If American Jewry is seriously concerned about rescuing a maximum number of Jews from Germany, if it genuinely desires to salvage as large a number as possible from Poland, Rumania, etc., it must provide far more than the paltry sums which have been given to Palestine in the pa,st few years. Even with the United ,Tewish Appe.il of last year the Jewish Agency recuivcd about $600,000, a trifling amount when one recognizes the vsist scope of the problem. 'There was unanimity at Washington on the place of Pales¬ tine as the p.iramount land of Jewish immigration. Zionists and non-Zionists alike admitted it.' A highlight of the conference was the reading of a message from Alfred M. Cohen, President of thc B'nai B'ritli, who said that just on the Sunday when the confer¬ ence was meeting at Washington the B'nai B'rith, also convinced that Palestine is the only place, was considering a specific task to help the upbuilding of Palestine. It seemed to be the convic¬ tion of all the delegates, a greater number and of a more repre¬ sentative character than even at last year's historic conference, that whatever energies American Jewry was to exert on behalf of the Jews of Germany as well as elsewhere shpuld go largely to the one land where thc greatest results could be obtained: Palestine. The second important decision of the conference was its em¬ phasis upon the Jewish Agency for I'alestine. Anything to be done in Palestine through the funds raised by tlic Council for German Jewry, a new body to be created by the committee headed by Sir Herbert Samuel,, must be planned jointly with and executed exclusively by the Executive of the .Jewish Agency. Thc inten¬ tion of that significant and epoch-making resolution was: first, to avoid duplication; secondly, to take advantage of the rich ex¬ perience of the Jewish Agency during fifteen years of constructive colonization and settlement work in P.ilestine; thirdly, to strengthen the supreme instrument of the .Jewish people in Palestine, as recognized by the League of Nations' Mandate, so that, politically and economically, it would be better armed to fight for Jewish rights and stimulate Jewish progress. The National Conference for Palestine brought together many of the most important leaders in American Jewry. They did not pussyfoot on important issues. They spoke plainly, yet with tact. Thcy decided on a great task, and they seemed imbued with seri¬ ous intention to execute it. We earnestly hope that the Jews of America will respond to the high scuisc of public responBibllilV.. that was the keynote and thc challenge of the National Con ference for Palestine. Z. B. T. Thc National Conference for l'i\Icstinc, ^summoned by the United I'alcstine Appeal and having the participation of the forty- two outstanding nation.al .leivish orRani^.ations of America, met at Washington, I>.
