Dimensions A Publication of Tiffin-Seneca Public Library www.tiiTinscn.lib.oh. us August, 2011 The End of Summer Why are the students so dreading the school year? What happened over the past three months that made them enjoy this summer so much? The summer reading programs at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, of course! Every year, T-SPL hosts four summer programs: one for children, one for teens, one for adults and one for audiobook listeners. > ^«T ^_< ^ ^^t tffc -+ * Jr "1 ^^to This year's children's program "One World, Many Stories," had 754 children participate, including three year olds to children entering grade five. (That's 111 more than last year!) All participants were encouraged to read or be read to for twenty minutes every day, and mark off their progress on their reading record. During those fun eight weeks, kids could stop by for a special program, get new books and pick up a prize or two after completing half of the record. They received another prize after completing the whole record. So far this year, almost 400 kids completed the program! Good reading! Some of the special events held by the Junior Library included a special kickoff event by ventriloquist Mark Wade and other events like "One Whirl, Many Stories" with cartoonist Jeff Nicholas, "West African Drums" with West African drummer Sogbety Diomande and "World Games Night" hosted by the Junior Library to celebrate those who finished the first half of the reading record. And what exactly have Seneca County's teens been doing all summer? They've been taking part of "You Are Here," the teen reading program. One-hundred-and- eighty-eight teens (in grades six through twelve) took part in the program this summer, up from 172 last year. This year, teens read 299,812 pages, an increase of 30,000 over last year. During the program, teens reported the number of pages they read to receive a reading prize, donated by one of our sponsors. The teens also took part in special events at the libra r y like "Make Homemade I c e Cream," "Build a Guatemalan Worry Doll" and "Create a Candy Wrapper Bracelet," to name just a few. Adults have put in their reading (and listening) time in this summer as well. Almost 100 adults took part in the "Novel Destinations" summer reading program, reading 646 books. The adult summer listening program, "Passport to Listening" had 53 listeners who listened to almost 300 books. On top of the joy of reading or listening to a good book, all participants in the adult and listening programs entered to win a prize for every book they completed. Congratulations to each winner! And, to all of our summer reading sponsors: we couldn't have done it without all of you! Thank you to everyone: A.J's Heavenly Pizza, Ballreich's Potato Chips, Big Boy Family Restaurant, Big Dipper, Burger King, Cinemark USA, City of Tiffin Park and Recreation, Denny's, Heritage Lanes, Jolly's Drive-In, Level Up, Little Hugo's, Marco's Pizza, McDonalds, OSS Joint Solid Waste Management District, Shake Shak, Subway, Taco Bell, The Wax Shack and Wendy's. A big thank you to our major sponsors: The Friends of the Library, the B.A. Seitz Foundation and the National Machinery Foundation. Indeed, with the reading, listening, prizes and fun at the library, it truly has been a wonderful summer. No wonder the children don't want to go back to school!
