The caes decided are discussed with great care, and expounded with uncommon furee I scarcely know of any volumes, which I deem of more imparl-ance or value for a prutensional library. JOSEPH STORY. Camdridou, Jan. 'A 1645. Gentlemen : Your letter oi the 24th has been received, in which you ask my opinion as to the value of the English Exchequer Reports, from Price downwards to this time, to an American lawyer, and as to the expediency of reprinting them in this country. Of the high value of theso Report, both on the Pleas and Equity sides ol the Court, I have not the least doubt the decisions of this Court for the last fifteen or twenty years, both at Equity and In Common Law, being entitled to equid respect will, any others in England. I should think an American lawyer's lihrnry essentially incomplete without them. I am, (ientlemen, very respectfully yours, Messrs. T. Sl J. W. Johnson. SIMON GREENLEAF. OLD DR, JACOB TOWNSEND, The original ditcmerer of the Genuine Tovntend Sartaparilla OLD Dr. Towiistind Is now about 70 years of age, and has long been known hj the Author and Discoverer ofthe (it-nuinc Urlgfnal "Town-end Sarsaparilla." Being poor, he was compel led to limit lis mnnufneture, by which means it has been kept out of market, and the sales circumscribed to thosu only who had proved its worth, and known its value. It had reached the ears of inniiy, nevertheless, as those persons who had been healed nt ore iliwases, and saved from death, proclaimed Its wonderful cures; It relaxes strictures and tightness, removes all obstructions and invigorates the entire, nervous system. Is not this then the Medicine you pre-eminently needt But can any of these things be said of H. I . Towinend's inferior article! This young man's liquid is not to bo compared with the old Doctor's, because of one grand fnct that the one is incapable of deterioration, and never spoils, while the other does : muring, fermenting, and blowing the bottles containing it into fragments : the sour, acid liquid exploding, and damaging other goods t Must not this horrible compound be poisonous lo the system ? What f put acid into a system already diseased with acid f What causea DIspepsiH hut acid t pom not all know that when food sours In our stomachs, what mischief it produces i flatulence, heartburn, palpitation ol the heart, liver complaint, diarrlnna, dysen. tery, colic, and corruption ofthe blood I What In Scrofula hut an acid humor In the body? What produci a all the humors which firing on Eruptions of tho Skin, Scald Head, Salt Rheum, RryWDfUi, White Swellings, Fever Sores, and all ulcerations lo-tenia! and external? It is nothing under heaven but an acid substance, which sours, and thus spoils all the fluids of the body, more or less. Whht cnuses Rheumatism but a sour and acid tbifd which Insinuates itself between the Joints and elsewhere, Irritating nnd inflaming the delicute tissues upon which It acta ? So of nervous diseases, of Impurity of the blood, of deranged circulation, and nearly all the allim nts which afflict human nature . Now 1s It not horrible to muke and still, and infinitely Worse to use this Souring, Fermenting, Acid "Compound of S. P. Towns-end, and yet he would lain have it understood that Old Dr. Jacob Townsed s Genuine Original Sursaparilla, Is an Imitation of his ulerior preparation 1 1 lleiiven toi luil tht wo should ileal In fin iirticle u-hicli nihl wear the most distant resemblance to S. P. Townsend's article I We wish it understood, becauo it is the absolute truth, that S. P. Townwiiil's article anil Old Dr. Jacob Townsend's Sarsaparilla are heaven-wide apart, and Infinitely dissimilar; that they are unlike in every particular, having uol one single, thing In common. As S. P. Townsend Is no doctor, and never was, is no chemist, no phn rm accu tint knows no more of medicine or disease than any other common, unscientific, unprofessional mnn, what guarantee can the public have that they are receiving a genuine scientific medicine, containing all tho virtues ofthe articles used iu preparing it, and which are iucnpablu of changes which might render them the Agentn of Disease instead of health 1 Since the above was put in type the following fact lias come to our knowledge; which is truly tyled The Triumph of J ml Ice The War Ended! 5. ' Tomttcnd abandoned the field Old Dr. Jacob Townnend vin dicated by the People !!! S. P. Townsend hns at last given up ttie mnnufneture of any more Sarr-nparilln, having disposed of lnsbusinesn iu some strangers. Thus his claims to Originality and other pretensions fall to the ground. He voluntarily abandons them, In thus evading tho issue before the public, by disposing of his trade. Hereafter it is to be sent out to the people by some Strangers, yet benring the name of S. P. Townsend. We have been informed that these Strangers Intend to print on the labels the name of some Chemist, in order to redeem, if possible itf bad character of Souring and Fermenting. Let the people fully understand that no Revamping, no new botching, no prefixing of Chemist's names or any other folly will redeem S. P. Townsend's souring compound from public odium, unlesn it is made entirely different from its present character; nnd it they do this, it will become another article of Sarsaparilla, and they might as well give it another name first as last. It should then be called tho "Stranger's Snrsaparilhi," nnd not S. P. Towncnd's. But if there is no alteration, the. people; may still expect the same old Souring, Fermenting, Root Beer ntuff. We have felt it a duty to inform the public of thn true position of this matter, that Old Doctor Jacob Townsend's SarsapiiriHa may not be confounded with this souring article. In conclusion we would remark that ROOM months ago S. P. Townsend left his old stand in Fulton st., a first rale store, and sat himself down only a lew doors below us, in Nnussau st.,the motives nnd objects ot which we leave others to judge. We understand theso Strangers, who have taken up S.P.'s business, intend to remain there. Such conduct needs no comment. We shall move from Nassau street in the Spring, and we will then see if these Strangers follow us as S. P. did. Depot for the Old Doctor! Bantptrflll is now 103, Nassau st. THOMPSON, SKILLMAN &. In my judgment tin y areuet excelled by any contemporaneous Report-, in learning, ability, or general utility, and intercut. P. S. P.
