Ititrtflrlmit to sUnre-rila nml Trm-hcra, McGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC READERS aro now presented, newly stereotyped, thoroughly revised, and greatly enlarged, with many and impoilanl improvements, and in their approved form are regarded as ihe cheapest and besl reading hooks in the English language. In this series, comprising as it does a careful selection of moral, instructive and entertaining matter, progressively arranged, and graduated with reference lo ihe capacity of the pupil, Dr. AtcGuf-fey has afforded to parents end teachers a most thorough, complete and efficient auxiliary in the education of youth. There does not exist a series ol School Readers more admirably and philosophically adapted to lead the pupil slep by step from the elements of tho language, lo llio furthered point in attaining which Ihe aid of an instructor can avail him. The Cincinnati Public Schools have recently been remodeled lo sonic exlenl as regards the use ol books, and notwithstanding the zealous ellnrls of others to introduce (heir own publications, McGiiffey's Eclectic Readers, cVc, were urani. niouslv ic-ndopled by the trustees. The lionrd of School Examiners for I lie county of Franklin, under tho provisions of the School Law w hich empower them lo recommend lo the several schools within said county such school books as they deem besl adapted lo Ihe purposes of education, propose, after examination, the use of McGiiffey's Eclectic Readors newly revised editions, and Ray's Arithmetical course, as the best within their present knowledge. As uniformity is desirable, and a uniformity of good books absolutely ncccssnry to prevent frequrnt changes, it is hoped that teachers will use every Inudnble effort lo effect the introduction of the above recommended series of books. " Brown's Reports embrace Ino period from I77H lo 1794, while Ihe woolsack was occupied in succession by lhose two master minds, Lord Thurlow and Lord Loughliorough. The first appearance of lliese Reports seems to mark an epoch in the Reports of Chancery not unlike that which n liltle later was established by Ihe Term Reports in Ihe King's Bench. Thcnrelbrward the judgments in both courts have appeared in an unbroken succession. Brown, therefore, must be considered as the leader of the regular lint of Reports in Chancery."The cases he has reported are of great practical value, a large pari of Ihem lying al the verv foundation of Chancery, J heir importance is attested by Ihe tarl lhat Drown s Keporis are oftencr riled by writers of authority than any oiher scries of Reports in Chancery. In England they have been enriched by lerrned and laborious annotations by Iwo different editors, Mr. Belt and Mr. Eden. Until Ihe present lime, however no edition of Ihem has appeared in Ihe V. "We have now More us Ihe nrsl volume ol an yimencsn edition, which promises lo surpass in interest and practical value any or Ihe fcriglun edilious ol ine worn; nor-lieve that there is any edition of any Reports lhat has ever been published, either in England or America, which ui recommended by such useful and ample ediional labors. I he notes of Mr. Bell have been retained, and those of Mr. Eden, so far as they could be made supplementary to Ihese, have lieen added. Thus the separate labors of these editors are accumulated on Ihe same page, imparling of itself to the present edition, a higher value than belongs lo either of Ihe English editions. In England no similar amalgamation of the two series of notes could lake place, as each is protected by Ihe laws of copyright The notes of the present edition are siriefly practical. Editors: 1 would beg leave through your journal to call Ihe attention of School Teachers and School Committees lo " Towndrow's Guide lo Caligra-phy," just published. It is an excellent system of Penman ship no one so well adapted lo lite wants of schools genral-ly, has, I candidly and unintrrestedly believe, been offered to in pontic, il comes, loo, in a ntting and ibrlonate time. Bascoin's system which has been extensively used, has become unpopular ; and II. F. Foster's books have failed of lutiiiiing the expectation wmcn tney raised a lailure, 1 eon-reive. A good system for schools, then, is much needed. Towndrow's, I am confident, will prove such. The Copies and the Writing Hooks a re so perfectly matched the system is so clearly delineated, and so tied up by a few plain rules, that il will go alone, and Ihe pupil must necessarily follow. This, indeed, is precisely what is wanted in our large schools, where but little particular instruction ran be given by the teachers. I recommend il lo the atlenlion of Uie numerous District Schools which are now about opening. , . , A TEACHER. For sale al wholesale and retail by Jan25. I. N. WHITING As. HUNTINGTON. Slates. I. N. WHITING As. HUNTINGTON.
