Tlie followinr account had been drawn up, it will be seen, by a committee of the passengers : SATi nnw, Sept. 12th, 1910. The steamship (Ireat Wesiern, 11. U. Mathews. Esq., commander, left Liverpool at 4 o'clock, P. M., hav'iig on board one hundred nnd twenty -sly. passengers, captain, live ofiicers.five engineers and seventy-four crew, in alt two iiunU'eu anu eleven pi-rsons. 1 he weather general was pleasant for the season of the yt'ar, and our jirogress good, averaging JVI0 nmes a unv. Satu day, Sept. IQtb, lat. 48 34, long. 57 43, at P. II,, light n;rs from the b. E. and foggy, withl-ghtdnz-zling rein, dot the yards ntofl, and set the jiha and lore siH'ticer. At G set the Bingle reeled main siM'ncer am the scjunre sails, with two reel's in the topsail. u At 4 P. M.llie wind increasing and vnrialde lo the Westward, took in the square sads, ou-er jib nnd main spencer. At 10 i . M., treshetiing gples and ugly wepiher; sea goumg up and iossing h'gh. At turn- ni-'lil increasing ales and heavy squalls ; took in the lore upeneer, the oulhnul having b ok en ; in liie mean iime the inner jibsiay bull s-eye hook broke ami the sail bucame use'essj hauled it down and set the fore a.aysai1." The above is an extract from the captain's log hook ami gives an account of the commencement of the awful s.cirin which the Great Wcsiern surmounted on her passage from LiverooI to New York ; one so ler-rilic du -iiig its continuance, ami marked by such a signal deliverance in tJie end, that it should be carefully related. "Sunday, 20th, at 40 minutes past 2, A. M.,'' con tin Off the log, "split the fore slay sail ; took in the remains of it and lay to, under bare poles. The sea r'-sing frightfully, nml breaking over and against the ship At4,llie wind increased to a iieavv storm, and the sea running most furiously at the ship. The wind veering to the N. W. nt the same lime, and the ship breaking off into the trough of the sea,ren-ih-ivtl our situation more critical. A great quantity of water got into the engine room, from the sea breal' ing over the ship, which was pumped out by the lee bilge pump.'" Sunday morninir most of the passengers assembled in the cabin and saloon. Their haggard faces told too surelv of the sleepless and anxious night which had piisseii. Even those most ignorant of nautical afiairs could not fail lo discover that we were in the midst of great pe'il. Few could dress with their accustomed care, owing to the violent pitching and constant rolling of the vessel. The slewards abandoned any ot-fempt to prepare the breakfast table, and both then and throughout the day were obliged to content themselves with bringing such articles of food as were most convenient, lo Ibose who felt, any disposition lo eat. H 1 1 o'clock, A. M. a heavy sea broke over the fore part of the starboard wheel house, or paddle bo:;, which sLa'ted the ice house and large iron life boat from their fastenings and wnshed Wmm to leeward, nnd with much dilliculty they were temooraritv se cured. " To understand tliis, the reader must hear in mind Lhtttbt Great Wesleni is, so in speak, three stories high forward mid all, and two in the waist, or middle of the ship ; at., there is the lower story or cabin ; nbove V,tlie MMC. the roof or covering id' which is the qua i ter deck, and may "or the purpose of desert p-l on he considered as n third story. In the waist, or middle, the lower story is occupied by the engine room, the roof or covering of which is the main deck. On Ill's main deck, in the centre, nre placed the chimney, gallies and ice house. The various ollices appertaining to t lie stewarosnnd police of the ship, at flu- sides. Tins pnrt is open nbove, and protected by the wheel-house nnd sides of the ship, which rise to the height nf 14 feet. The width of ihe paddle ho.t is about 12 feet. The ice house contained some seven or eight tons of ice. and was fastened by elects and Biaunchions. Let Ihe reader imagine the force of the sea, and the height of the wave, which- rs.ng over the paddle box, struck the ice house and the Inrge iron life boat nbove it. twisted them from their fastenings, breaking (lie ice house into two parts, ripping off the planks, crushing the starboard companion wav, and only preve nted from making a clear breach in the Bides of the ship by a si'ddcii Ujrtl to port. Meanwhile the wind howled most frightfully through the rigjfing. " At 1 1 o'clock and It minutes, A. M. attempted to wear ship, to get her on the other tack, (thinking she would he easier) as the wind still continued to veer to .Norihward. Lowered tlniafter guffs down; manned the lore rigging, and loosened the weather yard arm of ihe foresail, to pay her off, but found it had no effect. Therefore let her come to again. In the mean lime the sqmiie (mils blew nwny from the yards. " 1 1 ,'), A. M. The lee quarter bouts were torn from the davits by a heavy lee lurch of the ship, bending the davits, tearing out the ringbolts from their stems and Hiern.' Word was pnssed among the passengers that two of our boats were gone, nnd ihe others were likely to follow, Ihe davits and bolts beginning to give. But not a remark was made; each spoke to the other only th "ugh the eye. And Ihe ominous silence which per-vnded the whole company told how sensihly all felt themielvea in the very presence of the King of Ter-o s, uncertain of their doom. It was wondeiful to see how a few short hours changed the condition and feelings of all on board. The grades and distinctions incident to so large a l onipany, varying in social position, citizens of almost nil countries, and professing different creeds, yet, in the presence of so imminent danger, all distinctions seemed merged into one common emotion of awe, as ne stood toother in the court ol the great leveller, Ir;iH'. With tins intense feeling which bound us together as one, came also another of an opposite and -epclling character. Kvery heart was deeply occu-P'cd Willi ils individual griefa and memories, as if not another shared the peril. Home, wilh ita loved ones, and a thousand cherished hopes and joys, rose fresh to the view, and with a power like the storm, swept over Ihe mind and left it like the ocean, tempest tost and troubled. "See," said a gentleman to me, " no one converses, no one reads alt are engaged, each with his own thoughts ; and if my wife and children were here, I confess, my feelings would he of the most distressing character.' " Hut, " said I, " they suffer in your losa." " ery true ; yet it is only a question of time, and, whether sooner or later, God's will be done." " At noon, storm and aea raging in all its fury, sea still breaking over the ship, a heavy sea struck the larboard paddle box and smashed it to atoms, sprung lie spring lieam, hreaktog the under half; shattered he parts of the ship attached thereto. A splinter struck the captain on the head while standing nn the poop, and the force oj the blow, together with the aea, carried him over the lee quarter, and he was only eaved hy the nettings. "After this sea had paaaed over, we found the water had gained on the pumps; the wind appeared to lull a little and the ship a little easier, but still blowing a storm All the batches, except those made use of for passing into the engine room, were battened down, and the skylights partially covered. The weather continued the same until midnight, at which time it lulled for harf an hour The l"g conveys to the reader some idea of the I state of th- ship and effects of the storm on Sunday j at noon Its effects on those below can beat be given ; in the words of genii, man who remained the greater ; pari of the time in the cabin : j "To r mvey an idea of the appearance of all around ; is out of my power. In the worda of Sheridan lthe vmpest roamed m alt the terror of its glorv Ihe atmosphere was surcharged with a thick spray, rendering a look far out to seaward impossible. The wind howled, roared and bellowed, like the constant muttering of the thunder cloud Huge waves of tremendous height and volume, rose tn mad display around the ship, threatening every moment to break over us amidships and crush the v sael Sea after aea, s'riking us with terrific noise, caused the gallant ship to stop for an instant, tremble and shake in every timber from her stein to her stern post ; reeling and lureinng, tossed to and Iro, again woutu siie gather fresh strength, and with her wheels half hid in the wild Wiiium, auain and strain receive the thundering blows of an element that seemed armed for our de struction. The sails on the yards, Blrongly secured by ropes and gaskets, were blown from their furls and streamed out to leeward in ribbons. Hut all this waa aa nothing. About 1 P. M.t while most of us were seated in agonizing suspense in the lower cabin, hulding fast to the tables and settees, a aea struck the vesssel, and a tremendous crash was heard on deck. Instantly the cabin was darkened, and torents of waler came pouring down upon us through the skylights. 1 Scarcely had the waters reached the noor wnen an the cabins and state rooms sprang to their feet, and simultaneously, as if by concert, the ladies uttered a scream ot agony, bo painful, so tearful and ao despair ing, ttie sound ol it will never be forgotten ; and heaven grant that such a wail of anguish may never again be nearu oy me. several tainted others clasped their hands in mule despair, while many called aloud upon their Oeator." The crash to wEiich the writer alludes was caused by the tearing up of the benches and other wood work ihe quarter deck, these were nuriea witti vio lence against the sky lights, by the same sea which broke tuc windows o' the saloon, drenching tiie berths on the larboard side, driving out their affrighted occu pants, while it smastied by its weight the glass over tin- ma'n cabin, and thus forced its way below. This was a period of intense emotion. I was sitting in the upper saloon, striving to protect some ladiel from injury. So violent were Ihe shocks of the vessel, although thinly braced, it was with great dilliculty we could prevent ourselves being hurled from our seals, and duslied Willi auch violence against a part ol the vessel as to endanger h e or limbs Many received severe contusions and bruises, notwithstanding all their efforts. It was an anxious hour. My eye wondered over the different groups in the saloon, resting one while on a father passing from one to another of his family, and cheering with a kind word an interesting group of daughters ; then on a young wife folded to the bosom of her husband, without a syllabic being uttered, but Hie action spoke volumes; and again upon a mother whose children had been left in America, as she clnnped her hands as if in secret prayer, while her husband and her father gathered around, and all seemed bowed down to earth in one common feeling of lender solicitude for those who might so soon become helpless orphans.(t was an awful hour. The most thoughtless among us cowered ir their secret hearts bclore a danger, which none but a fool or a brute would have mocked, and all therefore accepted the invitation to meet in the cabin for prayer. RaW. Mr. Marsh read the 107lh psalm. Kev. Dr. Smucker prayed. Kev. Dr. Jleeeher made a few solemn remarks. Uev. Dr. Ilalch reiteated Ihe words of our Savioi, " Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God. believe also in ine, " commenting hricliv on their consoling import, and then invited all present to join with him in the Lord's prayer ; aLer which he oronounced the Aj oslolic benediction. ISight a-mroaclied. And again I quot- from tho gentleman who haB kindly given an account of what took place below. m Amid this accumulation of horrors, and still more to add to our alarm, night gathered in around us. The wind, far from abating, was on Ihe increase, tho lulls in the storm being less frequent, and (he squalls it any thing more terr.lic. The whole ocean was one sea of loam, lashed up into terrible waves, wild and angry, while the spray ond wind seemed driven through the rigging and over the Blup, as if with wild demonical power. As darkness came, clus'ered together in the cabin, we all thought and reflected on our fate. Most, if not all ol us, had given ourselves up for lost. Kur what wilh Ihe heavy laboring of the ship, the terrible no.se and bowling of the wind, thn continued frequent thumpings of the sea, the quiver ing and shaking ot the groaning timbers, the carrying away of so many portions of the vessel's upper works, ami the knowledge that we were perhaps fur another night to be ex posed to the full power of a raging hurricane, left us httle to hope for. " In liie evening, about!! o'clock, Ihe Rev. Mr. Hutch, at the request of several passengers, adoiiiiisti red the llo'y Communion in the cabin, to upwards of aixty persons many of whom received it there for the firi-t time in their lives. Heveral applied lo him as to the proprieiy of their embracing that occasion to fulfil a long cherished purpom of their hearts, hut which, like many other " gonci thoughts, " had been deferred to "a more convenient season. " They all communicated, together with others of almost every creed and na -on, thus reminding usof the promise of Scripture, "tliey shall come from the F.ast and the West, the North and tht South, and Bit down with Abraham and Isaac nnd Jacob, in the kingdom of God. " It was a most solemn scene. Mr. Blacb first read the service appointed for a storm at sea, after w hich, the whole communion office. The terrible conflict of the elements w hich raged without waa rendered yet more sinking hy the impressive stillness which pervaded i hat company of Christ's disciples within. Gathered around the lable, they received, into hearts deeply moved, the consecralcd emblems of the Redeemer's body and b'ood. All fell comforted hy tho blessed ordinance of grace. Many a boBom before tossed with fear, was now tranquil through faith. Once more, all renewed their vows, and realised tho peace of (iod shed abroad in their hearts, t.nd felt, wilh a vividness perhaps, never before known, "Your life is bid with God in Christ." Oh ' it was a night and a communion long to be remembered. After the communion, I returned to my state room. The gentleman who shared it with me had gone he-low, to die, as be expected, in company with his daughter and son-in-law. Left therefore alone, la-king a Inst look at the picture of my little family, and commending them, and all dear to me, to the grace and protection of God, 1 lay down and slept peacefully."Monday 21st, 1230," continuesthe log, "the storm commenceu raging again in all its fury, and Ihe sea a perfect loam, till I A. M., at which time the clouds began to break, and the squalls less furious. Got the ship's bead to Ihe N. V. and hauled lln- yards round, Ihe sea still raging is before, and nearly ahead, curling and breaking over the ship in everv direction. At noon tiie storm cease d ; but the sea continued more violent till 2 P. M . at which time it ceased gradually with the wind having lasted about 36 hours ; during which time, it gives me much pleasure to state, my officers and crew conducted themselves with great coolness and presence of mind." At half-past " o'clock on Monday morning we were in the greatest possible danger. Mr Stevens, one of our passengers, says of it "A peculiar lifting of the haze in the Last, with an appearance of an amber colored belt of light, low down on Ihe horizon, warned us of an approaching blow. Presently it came, a perfect tornado, driving before it the clouds of spray, and aa it neared us, fairly lifting up the white foam from the waves, like a shower of rain. A the squall struck us, the ship careened over and buried her gunwales in the ocean, and lay for a few moments stricken powerless, and apparently at the mercy of the savage waves that threatened tocngulph us. This was the trial, the last round fought between the elements and our gallant vessel. At this critical moment the engine was true to her duty. St'll went nn its revolutions, and round and round thundered her iron water wings. Gradunllv recovering her upright position, the good ahip, with head quartering the tea, came up to her course, and all was well. It was the climax of the storm, the last great effort of the whirlwind king, to send us to the sea giant's cave below." On Monday, about 12, the stcirm had abated sufficiently to admit of standing on the upper part of the companion-way with safety. It waa a sublime, hut an awful spectacle. The ocean still labored under tlie effects of the hurricane. The wind veered 20 points in ?lt hours; it ia impossible to imagine or describe thn w ild and tangled confusion of the waves. Rising to a height apparently greater than that of the mainmast,, they leaped and roared around the ship, as if hungry and maddened at the loss of their prey. At times the Great Western seemed aa if lowered by unseen spirits into her watery grave ; and every moment yoo expe ted it to be filled in, and her n quiem sung by the winds amidt the wilderness of the water. But our danger was past, and with grateful hearts, on Tuesday morning, all astembed in the cabin to render an act of common prayer and thanksgiving. Rev Dr. Smiick t read a psalm and made mme appropriate intmdoctory remarks, and Rev. Dr. Bee-cher addressed the passenger at length and with much force on the mercy we had eipcrienced, and prayer was offered. After the religions services were ended, Archibald Gracie, Esq , of New York, was called to the chair, and the Rev Mr. Marsh, appointed secretary On motion, it was Kcsolreif, That a committee be appointed to draft a

The above is an extract from the captain's log hook ami gives an account of the commencement of the awful s.cirin which the Great Wcsiern surmounted on her passage from LiverooI to New York ; one so ler-rilic du -iiig its continuance, ami marked by such a signal deliverance in tJie end, that it should be carefully related. Marsh, appointed secretary On motion, it was Kcsolreif, That a committee be appointed to draft a |
