The proprietor has long devoted his attention to this particular brauchof domestioecunomy, and nsssing from one improve- ment to another, has ut length arrived as near perfection aa it is possible to reach. A proof this Is found In tho very general Lse of these Coolers in all parts of the country. A better proof of tbe same fact is, tbat, since tneir Introduction, various imitations of the genuine articlu have been attempted all falling short of the object, it is true, yot all proving clearly which way the tide of popular opinion ia selling. A simple statement of facts, in regard to these Coolers, will atlaly every one ot their superiorly. First, they are the only article of the kind ever patented. They are furnished with two distinct nonconducting chambers, by means of which, with two oounds of Ice to the sallon. water ia kept (at a temperature of 40" Detow sero, or only 8" above tno tlie lrcczing point) an uay. Thus, at a cost of some live cents per day, a family of ordinary size can be constantly supplied Willi water as cold as ice itself ; larger numbers in the same proportion. This has been found by actual experiment to be saving of at least aeventy-tive per cent, over tbe Earthen Jara lormerly used for this purpose. Again, these Coolers never sweat ; in this way saving much unnecessary waste aud trouble. Being manufactured in the most workmanlike style, and handsomely finished In every respect, they make a very boautilul ornament for tbe Dining Room, Hotel or Steamboat. An imnortant improvement haa latelv been added to the Cool er, Tlx i a small Pan (capable of holding from six to eight pounds ot butter) Inserted directly under the cover. This quantity of butter can be kent Derfectlv hard all dav. without additional ice a very important addition to tho economy and comfort of amines. Deep In my heart there is a sacred urn i I ever guard with holiest care, and keep From the cold world's intrusion. It Is filled . With dear and lovely treasures, that I prlre i Above the gems that sparkle in the valea Of orient clime, or glitter In the crown. Of .ceptered king.. The priceless wealth of life ; Within tbat urn I. gathered. All tbe bright And lovely jewel, that the year, have dropped ; Around tne from their pinion., in the .wilt And noislos. flight to old Eternity, Are treasured there, A thousand buds and flower. That the cool dew. of life', young morning bathed, That it. .oft gale, fanned with their gentle wing., And that it. genial sunbeam, warmed to life And fairy beauty 'mid the melodle. Of fount, and tinging bird., lie boarded there, Dead, dead, forever dead, but oh, as bright - And beautiful to me is when they beamed With Nature's radiant Jewelry of dew, And they hare more than mortal sweetness now, For the dear breath of loved ones, loved and lost, Is mingling with their holy perfume. Liko A very miser, day and night I hide The hoarded riches of my dear heart-urn. Oft at the midnight's calm and silent hour, When not a tone of living nature seems To rise from all the lone and sleeping earth, I lift the lid softly and noiselessly, Lest some dark, wandering spirit of tbe air Perchance should catch with his quick ear the sound, And steal my treasure.. With a glistening eye And leaping pulse, I tell them o'er and o'er, Musing on each, and hallow It with smile. And tear, and sighs and fervent blessings. Thfn, With soul us proud a. if yon bine sky With all its bright and burning .tar. were mine, But with a saddened heart, I close the lid, And once again return to busy life, To play my part amid its mockeries. From the Ladles' Repository. THE MAHIAC. BY REV. B. P. CRARV, A. H. My heart yet shudders as I think nf her once loved and beautiful; and pious, now blighted, withered. frenzied, lost. Ones a gay and bright maiden ; then a subdued and devoted uiiristian, a wile, a mother, and then a sufferer, a criminal, a maniac. She passed through all these phases to suddenly, and basfened so quickly from the brightest joys to the deepest gloom 7rj..::. .1.... r ...1...J .1 :.l ..! " j ui uoBfmu, uiui i wuiiutiiGu at uie rupiu transition, BI1U ofteti have involuntarily prayed for the poor, unlortu-uate Louisa H-, as my mind recurred to her sad history. Though now an inmate of our Stale Asylum for the insane, I will not iulrude upon the sanctity of I he family circle if I detail some of tbe fearful stent of her brief career. Poor Louisa! the hat bad but little peace or rest since her entrance into this world of tin and sorrow, aud probably enjoyt at much now ia the hallucinaliont of delirium at tbe did when ber too ten sitive soul dwelt upou the unmitigated horror. of real life. Such it wat to her. No flowers for years grew in ber path, no joy thrilled her aoul, no friendship relieved ber wauta. Tbe public eye kuew not, pitied not her condition, till a tragedy a fearful tragedy-roused tbe people, aud then Louisa was a maniac. True, the once gathered flowers in the wild woods ; she nnco gamboled on the lawn, and tang responses merrily to the birds sbe loved. But when she entered life as an individual, she found ber path a tborny one. 0, could we get a true history of thut wandering spirit, nent up in a prison-bouse of day, and madly looking out on a bated world, we would bear a story that fie j tiou never turpatsed a tale of wrong and blood, of crushed hopes and recklest brutality, ot unmitigated wretchedness and wild blasphemy, ol savage rage and proud defiance, of exquisite revenge and terrible retribution, tuch as earth only can produce and bell itself only excite 1 Through trackless realm, of detpair poor Louisa wains ; out wo nope we pray tnut Uod would pity, and pardon, and save, aud tbat the wander er may reluru Io rest when life gives place to immortal ity. , I inoy here give the key that unlocks the myttery hanging around the haggard form of the wretched tub iect of this sketch her falher mat a common drunkard. He wat an important character in me village near which he lived, and wat tbe most noted fighter of the county of 11. iu bit days. : Half drunk, he was a bust in bit way, and would quarrel, aud sweur, and raise hghti, aud being a most expert pugilist, would engage iu them with evident gutto, and hence was universally respected (?) and dreaded. le was the hero of every patriotic row, and the soul of every training-day's en tertainment. Politicians were ready to court bit favor and his notorious powers made bim the object of vil lage goasip for duyi after the elections. The com mon rendezvous of bachunnals, the village dram shop, was never luiriy graced, and nevor atlractive to the patriotic posterity ol revolutionary sirei till tbe hery D. had appeared. While, however, the rumseller and the groveling office aeeker, and tbe town loafer, and the county loafer, nnd the county hlillv. all rejoiced in the friend. ship of this profane and drunken blackguard, tbey for got the place wbere hit meek wile and lovely daughter lived and suffered. When sober he was kind aud induslrious, and frugal, and made a good living as it was said. But when drunk he was a demon incarnate; and going home in a fury, he would beat his wife, abuse his children, and perform all other acts and deeds which common druukardt do in tuch caset. A change took place which for awhile tnrned tbe current of affairs, and altered somewhat ths the hith erto unvarying misery of B i family. The Methndisti had a small society at B., and at a quarterly meeting some years ago a great revival took place. Scores of sinneti of all classes were brought into lbs church, and converted to God. It was one of those revivals which mnke a marked impression on society. The very foundations of the wicked were torn from under them, and for many dayt there wat weeping, praying, and tlioiiting in tbe now changed and happy R. The adjacent country partook of ths heavenly bleating aud Hocked to tne mercy teat, and many, very many, were made happy in a Saviour's love. Among the convettt were B. and hit family. He professed to experience the pardoning favor of God ; bis wife, too, bowed to Jesut with ber loved husband; and io humble contrition tbev forgot all their trouble and sought only to glorify God. Louisa was converted. Now she was happy. Sbe teemed to be in a new world. Old Ihinut had pasted away all thinet bad become new ; a new father, a new mother, a new home and a new heart. ', No wonder she shouted, at the often did. when the told in class or love featt the simple ttory of her salvation, one wat a beautiful girl. lier temper .u 1x1 uod by grace, her tool kindled into raptures, her voice raised in song, ins presented a lair picture. He who wat her pastor then told the writer, tbat a more lovely girl did not belong to tbe church at that time than tbe rejoicing yoUDg convert. Her iweet voice wat frequently beard in prayer in the public congregation ; and many predicted a happy future for tbe unfortunate girl. The family altar wat erected in tbe reformed drunkard'! house a family Bible was purchased ; and a few halycon days passed over the cottage dwellers. The itinerant minister visited and prayed with the happy circle, and every thing seemed to indicate a tnorough relormation ol the courageous and passionate B. , Half a year had eons since this great change was wrought, and still the skies over Louisa were bright; but clouti were gathering, and soon the green, beautiful world in which she dwelt was to be blackened, scorched, blighted, and she, a wandering, lost one, to be raving amid it curses. I would be glad to stop hers, and leave that family in the enjoyment of hope, and peacs and pardon, but I feel that the truth ought to be told in this case, and sorrowfully proceed to my task. . U. bad long abnnned tbe dram-nnp. c3 inducement had been sufficient to lead In the fatal stall where cruel men murder souls ai well as bodie. He became strong in bis self-confidence), after months of trial, and at last yielded so fax the rigid determination of mind as to go for some trifling article to the demlhful den of Beelzebub! bated minion. He went too far. He went SSW tne siimiow ol trie Aimigliiy. wing., aud leu witlmi tne DiacR, imlelul shade ol Krelm. ; be went to the frate. of perditiou be went to the mouth of tbe pit ; io climbed to tbe burning erater'i edge be made a truce with liii arch enemv. and forgot that he was a Uhrlitian i be took only one dram onlv one onlv oaa cup irom toe uemon nsna one cud or burning noi i- j . , 1 - . . . on one letoeao araugnt one long draught ol liquid woe ana wratn; ne wa. ruined, murdered, damned. I need .ay no more about hi. downward ronrae. He went from borne in the morning a kind. Christian latner ne came to mat nome at night a fool, a brute, a fiend. The change io Eden wa. .carcelv greater. Tbe transition wa. to violent that poor Lnnisa Inst her ell possession in the bitter grief of that frightful night, wnen sue leu nerseu to oe again a drunkard s daughter. She finally nought relief from the blasphemous carousals of her father'! house, in matrimony, Sbe had loved a euv vounff man l .he now married him. A few month, revealed to her shattered mind tbe fact that her husband was a drunkard not ao every-dav drunkard, but a tippler. She knew too well tho course of such a man, end day and night .ought to turn irom tne patu ol ram ner husband. Hut, alaal be wat too iar gone, and all her pleading only alienated bit now blunted affection. : and at last. Dovertv- atricken, brutalized, and viciout, he fled from hit wretched home and leu hit beipleai wife with an in fant to item the raging storm now buritiogaround her. What could she do now 7 What refuge could .he nnd r one most either work lor a subsistence lor her self and child, with feeble health and broken heart, or tbe must return to tbe companion of her abused moth er, and share that abuse for the sake of bread. Ne cessity forced ber to the latter alternative, and the wat once more at home. U, what a home I No altar there to God m secret ; no peace, except when the ra ving madman nnd infuriate beast, her falher, was irom home or asleep. In tbe yawning abyss of intemperance had sunk all ber hopes and happiness, and the hell-inveuled bevet- age had destroyed all the prized on earth. Acain and again she heard her father's curses pour on her pious mother'! head. Time niter time tbe seen hit brawny fiit strike ber mother', loved face. More than once had the beheld that mother's bleeding form, and heard that mother', wail. Murder, lust, blasphemy, race. norribie brutality these were ner daily companions. If she sought relief in prayer, her mother sobbing in another room would arouse her nature and tear her heart. Grossly deceived, villainously abandoned, cruelly abused, and tuch a dwelling place, she at last tunk un aer ner accumulated tunerings, ana every .nine wat gone : and now moody tilence marked ber demeanor. She spoke but little, seemed in deep thought, at if pondering tome mighty enigma, nr planning tome supernatural deed which would deliver her from the firet burning around her. Each recurring day made her prospects more gloomy; and now she thought nf deiending her mother from the attacks of her brutal father, anil of doing something which would relieve her, at least for a time, from the mighty burden weighing on her heart. One day in a drunken fit ber father bad aa usual, bruised and beaten her mother iu a most shocking manner. The poor girl delirious now with one consuming desire ot revenge and deliverance, gazed fixedly on ibe loved being who bad always been her friend her only earthly friend and, while her clenched bandt, ber gnashing teeth, her wild look, made her words ominous, said, in a subdued yet resolute tone, " I will kill him if be beats mother again." Tbe opportunity doet not lung delay, A yell from her inebriated futner rouset the family circle near the close of day, and cursing and furious from tbe village human tlahghter-pen he comes to rage, and beat and break hearts again ia bis own desolate home. Soon he begins hit usual work, and, maddened to the last degree, rushed upon his feeble and retreating wife. Louisa saw the fell monster again with hit bloody hand beating and mangling her mother's feature! ; and now, ootohins n fmm its plane, she hastened to avenge and defend her mother. She struck one blow sue laughed; she looked. Her falher was insensible. Again she laughed one loud, wild, vengeful laugh, and with theesger violence of the tiger, completed the work of death. She looked and laughed again. Her father was dead. l'onr Louisn wns mad. She lived to be tried for her life, to sit and heur the story told before a jury, and hear the pleadings of eloquent counsel. She was cleared, of course ; and now, in one of the wardi of our insane asylum, she lives still a maniac. Kind reader, have yon a heart to pity or pray? Then now, while you finish this article in vour loved Repository, ask God to bless the poor inebriate's wife, and daughter. I do not write fiction. My heart now swells, and the tears now flow from my eyes, while I ask yon to pray for poor Louisa. I had once a charge in which her mother waa a member, and I have been frequently in tho ward where ihe ib confined. But I tell the tale of the million; and if by writing this I could get ten thousand pious females to pray, while they read these closing lines, for the drunkards' families of tbit land, I shall do some good ; and while you pray, do not forget Louisa H., the Maniao. 1852. rriOffg 1852. . 1852. rriOffg 1852. .
