THE FIELD. . , .., The field you have had already a description of, but some further partionlara will be of in terest. The rebels, while they occupied their ground at and near tbe Springs, were not only sheltered by the woods and hills, but had also taken advantage of the long lines of stone walls aud fenoea, and in some plaoea they had built new and airong works, to enetter them, while our men were compelled to march up, on open ground, to the attack. Tbii they did wltb tha Utmost coolness and bravery, and, after three or four houra of the most severe lighting, thoy were finally compelled to return to their firat poailion, leaving the field temporarily in the hands of ihe enemy, who immediately began the work of atrlpping and rifling the dead. In some eaaei they took from the bodies of both dead and wounded ev erything of value, aometimei even taking the boots and pants, but they finally withdrew from the field, leaving their dead unhurried and many of their wounded unoared for. INCIDENTS OF THE BATTLH. At an early hour of the engagement, while the lid Ohio Regimont wae posted upon a somewhat elevated position, thoy were altaoked by one entire division of Gen. Hardee's oorps, for tbe purpoae of pressing them baok and turning the flank of the entire division under Gen.Ros- can, but tha 3d stood manfully to thsir post! until nunareoa were mowea sown. At this time the 15th Kentuoky was lent to thoir support, when tha rebels, in turn, were driven baok, butquiokly rallying, a moil despe rate nann-to-nanu encounter oocurreu, in which, for eomo ten minutes, man fought to man with the ferocity of tigers, aud at the end of that tlma tbe enemy were drven baok again, our iroopa following them oloaely and dealing death among them at every atep. The result of this single encounter was tbe loss, upon our side, of some bundled and nrty men, wntie tbe rebels left upon tbe spot nearly two hundred and fifty, many of whom had been killed by the bayonet. At tba lima mat uen. i.yue ien, struok in tbe breast by a piece of shell from a rebel battery. soma of his men wanted to remove him from the field, but as he then supposed he had been mortally wounded, he refused to allow them to do so. Baying that he wished to die cn the field. The rebela, however, drove our forces soon after from that portion cr tbe held, after whioh no. thing further bad ' been heard or the gallant General until yesterday, when he turned uo alive, nearly woll and paroled; but he says ha will be in the field again as soon as the Gov. eminent can effect his exchange. During tbe entire engagement Captaim Loom- is' Battery kept up an almost oontinued firing upon tuo n.uvi iiuob, Auvomug everyuiing in front of thorn into the moat admirable oonfu- aion. At one time General Bragg deolared that if that battery wera not soon silenoed the day waa loot to them. Soon after, several oflloeri of General Hardee 1 command reported themaelvea to him, and pledged themselves to take the bat tery or perisn. ine attempt was made, tba battery was not taken, but many ot these ofiloers perished, together with hundreds of men who had accompanied them. Indeed, to nndertaka 10 enumerate all tha regiments who behaved well would be limply to givo a Hat of all who were engaged, aa in the hour of danger none faltered or drew back, but among thoae more particularly nouoeanie were tne Tenth. Twenty. first and Third Ohio Regiments, and tha Eiihti eth Indiana. These were all most fearfully out up, and of me wnoie numoer or wnioh eaoh was composed, not mors than one-third wera left In fighting condition when the firing eeaeed in tha evening Tha loss In killed and wounded of the Third Ohio is about 265. Tha enemy took eonie three hundred or our troopa priaoners while they ware aeafohing the field for irlenda. During tne evening it Beams ansr tne omoer 01 the day had negleoted, after the engagement waa over, to poat pickets upoi tha field, and our own men wera allowed to roam around tha grounds in searoh of miaalng frienda. Tha enemy, taking advantage or una negligence, tarow forward a couple of regiments of Texas aavalry. Bo aud. den waa this movement, that they aurprised and captured nearly three hundred at car troops, wham they have ainoe paroled. Our loss, though fearfully heavy, Is not 10 great as waa at first supposed, and it ia now thought that thouaand will oovar tha whole number of killed, wounded and mlasing. Among theae wera a largo proportion of officers, of whom many wera wounded. , A large number of those who wera killed wera shot in tha head by rebel rlfiemea, while 1862 NUMBEK 100, hundredare wounded In the handa and armai indeed, ine number wounded la the right band seema almoat Improbable, there being not leaa than ona hundred and fifty. THE FIELD. . , .., The field you have had already a description of, but some further partionlara will be of in terest.
