SOME FACTS IN FIGURES The North Canton Fire Department wants the public to keep in mind that "Fire Prevention Week" begins on Sunday, Oct. 6, and the members will appreciate it if people will co-operate this year as in past years.- "We have found that the great majority of people in North Canton and its vicinity know the value of safeguarding life and property,, and as they are intelligent, they understand that a loss by fire cannot reimburse them, no matter how much the insurance carried," said Fire Chief Joe Smith to this writer for The Sun. "On the other hand," he continued, "there are a few persons who are willing to 'take a chance,' and taking a chance is dangerous business when ' it applies to fire. Cellars, attics, garages and back yards have harbored much rubbish, and that means taking a 'long chance.' The object of this department is to prevent fires. 'The business men and householders have listened to suggestions from the fire department and have followed them," said the Chief, "and as a result fires in North Canton have been few. And the fewer the better for all concerned." Quotes Some Fgures Continuing, Chief Smith'said: "Last year over §500,000,000 was lost by fire in the United States and Canada, a staggering amount when consideration is given the causes of fire, as, fire - prevention week, Oct. *MRNS CHIEF SMITH
Head of North Canton Department Says People Cannot Be
Too Careful and That the
Present Is a Good Time To
Abolish Hazards.
SOME FACTS IN FIGURES
The North Canton Fire Department
wants the public to keep in mind that
"Fire Prevention Week" begins on
Sunday, Oct. 6, and the members will
appreciate it if people will co-operate
this year as in past years.-
"We have found that the great majority of people in North Canton and
its vicinity know the value of safeguarding life and property,, and as
they are intelligent, they understand
that a loss by fire cannot reimburse
them, no matter how much the insurance carried," said Fire Chief Joe
Smith to this writer for The Sun.
"On the other hand," he continued,
"there are a few persons who are willing to 'take a chance,' and taking a
chance is dangerous business when
' it applies to fire. Cellars, attics, garages and back yards have harbored
much rubbish, and that means taking a 'long chance.' The object of this
department is to prevent fires.
'The business men and householders have listened to suggestions from
the fire department and have followed
them," said the Chief, "and as a result fires in North Canton have been
few. And the fewer the better for
all concerned."
Quotes Some Fgures
Continuing, Chief Smith'said: "Last
year over §500,000,000 was lost by
fire in the United States and Canada,
a staggering amount when consideration is given the causes of fire, as,

Frank Manton, new boys' work
secretary in the Community Building,
faced a big week .when he reported
for duty on Tuesday mornjng to succeed Carl B. Eschbach, who left this
Wednesday for Tyrone, Pa., to visit
relatives before sailing for the Philippine Islands to take up mission work.
The new man comes to North Canton from the Canton Y. M. C. A.
where he was assistant physical director for two years. .
Is a Friendly Chap
Mr. Manton, who has red hair, and
eyes that twinkle when he talks,
knows his work well, having had professional and volunteer boys' work ex-
pei'ience since he was old enough to
be a member of the Y. M. C. A.
Standing five feet, ten and one-half
inches, Manton weighs about 163
pounds and seems to be of the type
that boys will take an immediate liking.
Begins Work
Carl Eschbach, who has been here
several years, took Mr. Manton in
charge on Tuesday, showing him the
various details of the work he would
have to handle. Next week the new
man will interview the hoys of the
several clubs to get their "slant" rin
activities and to make them his
friends.
Most of the first week will be spent
in getting acquainted, Mr. Manton
