From the wealth of new books, Mrs. Flowers has ':>rk, .: . _■'. selected the following sampling. Magnificent color reproductions and heavy paper make "The Amish: The Art of ttie Quilt" ($75) the ultimate cof- feetable book. During the winter months gardeners might enjoy "Building Your Garden" ($17.95) by ran Penberthy and the large pages and color plates of the new Readers Digest "Book of Nortli American Birds" ($32.95) would surely please any bird watcher. For travelers, the new Rand McNally "America" ($75) has maps of each state as well as highlights such as major cities, population and the economy. Fieldings softcover "1991 Shopping Guide to Europe" ($9.95) is small enough to be easily packed and crammed with a wealth of information on what to purchase and where. For those interested in pop music there is "Rock Lives" ($24.95) with profiles of many performers including Elvis Presley, Prince, Bon Jovi, Diana Ross and The Grateful Dead. Cookbooks are always popular and this year are highlighted by Mai- da Heatter's "Best Dessert Book" which includes recipes as different as Ranch Bars and Kumquat Ice Cream. The pictures in Martha Stewart's "Hors d'oeuvres" ($21.95) are almost as luscious as the recipes. Typically elegant in the Martha Stewart fashion. A good basic cookbook is tlie updated "Fannie Farmer Cookbook" ($24.95). Sports enthusiasts might enjoy "Bo Knows Bo" ($18.95) by Bo Jackson or "The Quarterbacks: Tlie Truth About Men In The Pocket" ($19.95) by Micky Herskowitz. Good general interest books for that "has everything" parson on your Christmas list inlude Russell Baker's "There's A Country in My Celler" ($20.95), a collection of his columns from the New York Times; "A Life on the Road" ($19.95) by TV's traveling journalist Charles Kuralt; and "The Big Garage On Clear Shot" ($19.95) by Tom Bcdett, the well- known voice of Motel Six who talks about growing up, growing old and going fishing at the end of tlie road. In "The Ultimate" ($15) William Pound- stone takes on life's big questions and comes up with the answers like the roughest shot in billiards, the toughest tongue twister, tlie hardest hold in golf and the roost profitable property in Monopoly, among others. Moother Goose is always well received by children and Tomie De- Paola's new version ($17.95) is particularly well done, Mrs. Flowers says. A new edition of "Black Beauty" by Robin McKinley is delightful and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle is fun and educational for children. Best sellers include "The Burden of Proof" ($21.95) by Scott Turow author of "Presumed Innocent" and "September" ($22.95) a new novel for the legions of Rosamunda Pilcher fans. The complete uncut edition of "The Stand", all 1,153 pages, is a must by Stephen King readers. In large print books, there is "People Like Us" ($13.95) by Dominick Dunne, A magazine subscription geared to a particular interest is a great gift. Wrap up a current issue of "Ohio Magazine", "Parents", "Workbench", "Stereo Review" or "Fortune" and stand by for grateful comments on your thoughtfulness. COLORING CONTEST WINNERS.
