That most engaging comedienne in her profession, Lotta, makes her first appearance to night at the Opera-bouse. So much has been said concerning the brilliancy of the little favorite, from tbe Atlantic to the Pa cific, that it would appear entirely useless to say more. She speaks and acts for her self, and the unanimous, delight of her au diences' follows as a matter of course. In her vocabulary there's no such word as "tail," as her every appearance in comedy, song, dance and banjo solo amply testifies. This evening uXhe Female Detective? and ,lAj) Object oi Interest," are the attractions, and the house will be filled. Persons refusing or., neglecting' to perfect tiny duty imposed upon them by the act, are liable to a penalty of ten dollars, one-half of which goes to -the School Fund, and tbe other to the party making complaint, Tbe object contemplated by this law is of the highest Importance, and it should be attained if possible. Tvlth October, comes manifest signs of tho approach of the shivering, biting, chilly, freezing months. Light materials In clothing are giving place to warmer and heavier goods, and there is a general disposition among mankind to prepare to meet the changes of temperature. The styles this year for the business suits of daily use, have changed very little in general shape! The materials, however, are somewhat different-plaids being more generally used tor pants. Tbey have rather an odd appearance, after the quieter shades which have predominated until this fall. But custom makes the strangest things fa-tnlliar in time. . : Another style of dress business suits is single or double-breasted coat and vest of the same material, with pants ot a con- trastlol Shade, .made Of either English, French or r American . cashmeres. The American goods this season arapre-eminently the "vogney arid for" ordinary business, suits of pants, coat an3 vest f the same material are in demand. . For dress or party suits, the irrepressi ble bine cloth swallow-tails, with, brass buttons, will! be general! v worn. Im' eon junction with pantaloons of the i'Jsteou shade. - ' " ' ' Overcoats are a very Important article ot " consideration among the gentlemen, and the styles which are presented will verj likely prove acceptable. Fur-beavers are tho mnit fanhlnnable for all DurDOses. and the prevailing colors tend to olive 1 .nrt oreen. The 'material is great! v lltrhter I in manufacture, while the customary blue and dahlia shades give way to a very pretty olive or a rich delicate green.- They are made in the awtotrt style, and are decidedly, attractive and elegant. ' Panta- loons will partake of the plaid style, and I will be cu, luller. Boots and shoes of thepeaked-tumed-up-at-the-toe stjla will continue to be worn. The box-toe, with all its ugliness and Inconvenience, still finds tavor, with the people.""' O- - V The tendency is to wear clothes of rather finer texture. There is not so much dang' er of running this fashion into extremi s, a:was done when' coarse' goods Were in vogue. .... r . Thb White Boys in Blue don't like Chi" nese suffrage, and are going down to Thurman Hall to-night to see about it. . Communication J "Why Mecpeet Than. Uncles : ar, A Editok Statesman: Can any person in Columbus lnlorm the citizens of the First Ward what has become of Uncled Is be dead, or is be still in the land ot the living? Really, we would like to know. Before be was elected to the City Council, he promised to" do some grand deeds; be was go- log to have Spring street put in a good condition; he was going to give labor to the laborer, and be was going to do this and that. Six months have passed away since be was elected. What has be done? E;ho answers, what I Spring street (right under Undo' nose) looks rougher than ever it did before, and it is the only street that leads direct from High street to the Ohio Penitentiary. If there is aay street westot High street that needs a good side walk, it is Spring street. Gentlemen with ladies coming from the depot have to go up to Lonjstreet, if tbey wish to make visit to tbe prison ; for Spring street is not fit for any lady to walk on. "He was going to give labor to the laborer." Did ha not sneak out of voting for a Nicolson pavement on Town and Broad streets? He knew that the citizens residing on Town and Broad streets were wealthy, and well able to construct a Nicolson pavement. He knew it would be an im provement to the city. He knew it would give labor to the laborer. Then why did he not vote for it ? Was it bocau-e he was too lazy to attend tbe Council? Uncles, if yon must be a public Plan, you must woik lor tne puoiic. it you must be a -member of the Council, you must attend the Council, and not stay at home when your vote might do some good It you are too lazy to attend the Council meetings, why then we advUe you to re- sign, and will put some active worker In -jour place, tor we want-a man that when he promises to do a thing, he will do it, and not go to sleep while on duty. In truth, we want a man that is a man, no odds if he is as big as the Chinese giant, or as small as Tom Thumb. Ida Matqold. Thb White Boys in Blue are going to rally at Thurman Hall to-night. A Card f ram Air. Isabel-. Editors Ohio State Journal: It is editorially charged in your paper of yesterday, on what Is claimed to be informa tion from others, that 1 "employed money to influence delegates to the Democratic County Convention to vote tor my nomi nation, or, in other words, bought my place on the ticket." I pronounce this imputa tion upon my character as & private citizen, unqualifiedly faJte. Whatever opponents may politically say of me, no one has ever belore hinted that toe corrupt use ol money wasoueot my vices, a lact which everybody here, where I have lived for years, fully understands. Very truly yours, Llewellyn Baber. Colnmbus, October G.h, 18G9. The above note was handed by Col. Baber to the editors of the Journal yesterday, and also to us for publication.' Tvlth October, comes manifest signs of tho approach of the shivering, biting, chilly, freezing months. But custom makes the strangest things fa-tnlliar in time. . : Another style of dress business suits is single or double-breasted coat and vest of the same material, with pants ot a con- trastlol Shade, .made Of either English, French or r American . cashmeres.
