What -will Ice Cost? 4 Notwithstanding the fc.-that we have experienced a mrid Winter, and mat. to very considerable extent fire?, furs and pVerceati have proved; superfluous in this particular locality, the knowing ones in certain departments of business have neither (ailed to remember that a hotsum- mer is coining, nor that the colder regions tJ the Noruh furnished ample supplies of ice for use-during the approaching turn' mer. These knowing ones consist jef the regular dealers in ice which Is supplied to arniies, occupants of pfHcei and - business bouse; tothe manufacturers of beet-, ales and other fermented liquor; 'to ' hotel keeper; proprietors of 'restaurants, and others. - -- ' " The headj ftbe principal establish ments above referred to, became anxious In reference to their supply of ice for tbe coming sea?op, .and determined but a few dava a iro to fill their . receptacles from the great Lake crop of the northern portion of the State.' This seemed at first sight. to be attended with such Increased rates of ex pense In storing tbe ice vaults that careful estimate was made cf probable results. Business enterprise, however, advanced strong arguments, and the determination to obtain a supply at any cost, was the result." ' , the breweks ! Of our ctty led the van in tbe matter of a start in the Lake ice trade, and we found yesterday, the fjllowing report of their doings : ) Messrs. Born, Ho ter, Schlee, Henkle, Moerch and Stoker, separate business organizations, received by tbe way of the Smdusky, Mansfield and Newark,, and Central Ohio Railroads, one hundred and thirty car loads. the regular sealers Received the following: Messrs. Jaeger & Martin, forty-eight car loads; B. E. Allen, nineteen car loads. PROPRIETORS OF RE8TAUKANT3 Received the following: Messrs. L. Lindemann & Co., Ambos building, fjnr car loads. C A. Wagner, East State street, six car loads. miscellaneous. The Idiotic Asylum received seven car loads, and Mr. Peter Ambos received one car load. ' Tbe total number of loads arriving in this city so far, by the above route, reaches two hundred and fifteen cars. In addition to this, sixty-fonr car loads bave passed through this city by the same route, des tined for Cincinnati dealers and brewers ARRIVALS BY ANOTHER LINE, From Sandusky to Urbana, and from that point to this city per Columbus, Chicago & Indianapolis Riilroad, are as follows: Messrs. Jaeger & Martin, sixty-two car loads. B. E. Allen, fourteen car loads. L Llodemaun & Co., one car load. The total number of loads arriving in this city so far by the last named route, reaches seventy-seven. The, total number arriving by both rontes, destined for home consumption, reaches two hundred and ninety-two cars. THE COST Of this big supply ts hot tbe least inter esting feature ol our little report. Each car carries ten tons of ice, which gives us a supply of twenty-nine hundred and twenty ions. It is estimated by careful dealers In ice here that the average cost o1 each car load of ice, from the time it is bought . at Sandusky, shipped here by rail, hauled to tue jce-housea and stowed down for summer use, i3 145 per car. Two hundred and ninety car loads will then loot up to the nice little sum ot $13,140. In addition to this large supply of nearly three thousand tons from the Lake, we bave all of twelve other Ice houses in tbe city which have been filled by ice made on our own waters here. It was found impossible to gain any reliable ir formation concerning the amount stored in these smaller houses. And it must also be borne in mind tha; the larger houses which have received supplies from the Lake have also added largely to their stock by storing our home ice. Our readers can see by the above showing, the important extent of the use and the traffic in the article tf ice in our city. It is tbe opinion of experienced dealers that tbe retail price of ice to consumers in this city, during the coming season, will approach $2 psr hundred pounds. Transfers of Real Estate. The fol lowing transfers of real estate were left at the Recorder's office yesterday : L. Goodale's executors to Joseph Con way, lot .No. 104 and the undivided one- half of lot No. 107 in L. Yesterday afternoon, as the jury was proceeding up High-street in charge of Sheriff Thompson, a very laugable construction was put upon the facts connected with their public ap pearance. (The jury was under orders of Court to visit, by special train, ths point on tbe C C. & C. Railroad, where tbe wife of Mr. John Mara received ft juries some time ago. Trial of this case is now pend ing in tbe Common Pieas Court.) The Sheriff marched erect at the head ot his hon. ored twelve, and the entire company was tbe center cf general observation. We were in conversation with friends in front of the Neil House, while the delegation passed northward oa the east side ot tbe street, and overheard the fjllowing, be. tween a collection of young men standing near. It will be seen that some rather doubtful compliments were nnknowingly passed by the gazers on the moving body of jurors. "Hallo l Charley, there comes Sam. Thompson, with the prisoners!" " That's so, BUI ; who's that bird alongside of Sam'" "That! why that's Sharp, the coon who caught small-pox from croton uiL" " Where's Davis, the old Flat chicken killer ?" " I don't think he's among them h?y, yes, there be Is, that's hirn," pointing triumphantly to one of tbe most respects, ble of the party. But Where's them darkeys, that were seurbp f u On, they've gone up Front street." At this point of proceedings we thought It our duty to inform the gentlemen of their serious error, and proceeded to place them right on the record, in tbe matter oj identifying the gentlemen who had passed In company with the Sheriff. Tbe young men were greatly chagrined when they discovered their blunder, and expressed determinations to be more careful In futnre In reference to classifying members of the jury with prison birds. GROUND-noo Soup. Yesterday morning two men, evidently strangers in tie city, and not well versed in the ways of the world, went into C. A. Wagner's restau-ant and modestly asked for ''a drink.' After being supplied with the desired extract, the gentlemanly attendant asked the customers li they would take a plate ot soup. They thought they would like a little; It was served, and partaken of with apparent great relish. When they were nearly through with their soup, the at tendant at the bar thought he saw material for "game" In his patrons, and threw out a feeler, which resulted as follows : "Do you like your soup gentlemen?" '-You bet we do, old hoss !" "Say, do yer call this yer tartle soup?" "Oh! no sir, 'tis ground-hog soup sir, ground hog sour." "What," ex claimed one of the victims, "ground-bog soup ?" and then turning to bis companion, he declared that he had "et raw . bull frog, and stuffed on beech nuts, but he'd be darned ef ground. hog soop wasn't jist the nicest thing he'd ever swallowed." The last seen of the cus tomers, tbey were in the rear of the new City Hall discussing the delicacy of the newly found luxury, and canvassing as to the habitations of ground-hogs in their "deestricts." Mayor's Morning Court. The follow ing cases were disposed of yesterday : Thomas Jenkins and George Williams, went before the Mayor and charged a wo man named Ellen Scammerhorn with steal Ing from them the sum of $16. The woman is at tbe head of a bouse of Ill-fame on Third street, and htr informants were visitors. While there tbe money was stolen, which tbe woman acknowledged. Mayor Meeker came a flank movement on me entire party, and neid the men on a charge of visiting a house cf lll-f tme. They were each fined $10 and the costs, and tbe woman was fined $16, the amount stolen. All were committed in default of payment. George Gearhart and Martin Snell paid a fine of $10 and the costs each, for lolter- ng. W. Fitzgerald paid a fine of $5 and the costs for the same offense, and James Glenn, and Thomas Smith, each paid a fine of $1 and the costs on the same charge. R. Carpenter was committed in default a fine of $5 and tbe costs for the same offense, and Jack Slug and Tom Bung, each were committed In default of a fine ot $3 and the costs, on the same charge. The Rink. Tne ice at the Rink is in superb condition, and is nightly used by crowds of delighted citizens. Last night this spacious place of amusement was well tilled with a happy party, who cn- oyed to the lull the fun presented in Blind Man's Buff." To-night the boys and girls bave full possession of the Rink for one hour, dur Ing which time they will be delighted with "black-man," "ieap-lrog," a genuine old-time race, and everything else calcu lated to make their hearts merry. To morrow night the last regular masquerade of the season will take place. The features of the masquerade will be excellent music, Siamese twins, the three legged man, and lots of other things that will be good Good ice Is a sure part of the programme, regardless of any outside weather changes. Ba sure and go to-rlay and to-morrow, Court Matters. In room No. 1 of the C mmon Pleas Court, Judge Green pre siding, the case of John Mara vs. the C C. fc C. The jury proceeded on their mission yesterday afternoon in a spe cial train composed tf a locomotive and one passenger car, following a regular train on the road. This special train was under the entire control cf Sheriff Thomp son . Court adjourned at 2 o'clock in the after noon until 9 o'clock this morning. The Opera-Ho.isis. .' in place of amusement was again isUet by a large assemblage of ladies and gentlemen last night to witness the charming pleasantries of Miss Elise Holt as "Genarro," and tb funny doings ot Harry Wall as "Lucretl Borgia, M. D." The little lady who has already turned the heads of half our young men Is fast growing in popularity, and has established herself as a Columbus favorite She Is so cute, and witbal so graceful and winning in ber presentations, that the au dience eannot fail to be pleased. Thin hair is thick ened, fallinz hair checked, and bald ness often, thouffli not alwaj-s, cured by its use. Nothiug can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the elands atrophied and decayed But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling tho hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable, Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long on the hair, giving it a rich glossy lustre and a grateful perfume. When they were nearly through with their soup, the at tendant at the bar thought he saw material for "game" In his patrons, and threw out a feeler, which resulted as follows : "Do you like your soup gentlemen?" '-You bet we do, old hoss !" "Say, do yer call this yer tartle soup?" "Oh! no sir, 'tis ground-hog soup sir, ground hog sour." "What," ex claimed one of the victims, "ground-bog soup ?" and then turning to bis companion, he declared that he had "et raw . bull frog, and stuffed on beech nuts, but he'd be darned ef ground. hog soop wasn't jist the nicest thing he'd ever swallowed." The last seen of the cus tomers, tbey were in the rear of the new City Hall discussing the delicacy of the newly found luxury, and canvassing as to the habitations of ground-hogs in their "deestricts."
