Mrs. Hannahway, wife of Peter
Benway, passed quietly and peacefully
away at the family home on Catawba
Island at 2:15 Thanksgiving day after¬
noon. She had been ailing for nearly
two and a half years, and her death
marked the passing of one of Catawljas
pioneer settlers. /A-?- W3&
The deceased was born in New Yorl#
City on May 29th, 1847, the daughter
of John and Anna Barnholt. At the
age of four years her parents migrat¬
ed westward and settled on Catawba
Island, they being the first German
family on the island. Growing into
womanhood, she was untied in mar¬
riage to Peter Benway, to which un¬
ion four children were born. The two
oldest preceded her in death, Stela in
1885 and Dpuis in 1902. The two re¬
maining Alya J-» an"l Mrs. Daisy Mar¬
shall together with two sisters and a
brother and three grandchildren are
left behind to aid in comforting the
grief stricken husband.
At the time of her death Mrs. Ben¬
way was 81 years, 5 months and 29
days of age. She had lived her life
in such a way that when her final
summons came, she did not cringe
from the inevitable, but welcomes the
chance to meet her maker.
The funeral was held Saturday af¬
ternoon, from the residence of her
daughter, Mrs. Marshall. The Rev.
Eckhoff, of Danbury conducted the
services at the home and Rev. Lam-
bertus of Port Clinton at the Catawba
Island church. The body was laid to
rest in the Catawba Island cemetery.
