Description |
Dated ca. 1862, this lithograph shows the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Shiloh Springs, The Alfred E. Matthews Lithograph Collection contains lithographs of 36 different Civil War scenes drawn between 1861-1863. The artist, Alfred E. Mathews, served with the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a regiment that fought in the western theater. He participated directly or was able to observe many significant western battles. The prints depict scenes of the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Corinth, the Battle of Perryville, the Siege of Vicksburg and battles at Stone River and Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Alfred E. Mathews was born in Bristol, England on June 24, 1831 and settled with his family in Rochester, Ohio when he was two. For a time he worked as a typesetter for the Ohio Democrat, a newspaper in New Philadelphia, Ohio owned by his brother Charles. When the Civil War broke out, Mathews was teaching school in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He quit and quickly headed north. In August 1861 Mathews enlisted in Captain Cotter's battery of the 1st Ohio Artillery. Later he joined the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. During his three years in the army he used his artistic ability to make topographic maps and drawings. He also drew sketches that were made into lithographs and sold. Harper's Weekly magazine published two of his lithographs and General Ulysses S. Grant saw and admired Mathews work. After mustering out of the 31st O.V.I., he exhibited panoramic scenes of the War. Mathews moved to Nebraska in the summer of 1865 and went on to Denver, Colorado in the fall. Until his death on October 30, 1874, he continued to create drawings and lithographs of western scenes in Colorado and Montana. His work was published in four books, "Pencil Sketches of Colorado" "Pencil Sketches of Montana" "Gems of Rocky Mountain Scenery" and "Canon City, Colorado, and Its Surroundings." was a promotional work touting the virtues of life in Colorado. He spent the winter of 1872-1873 in southern California. Mathews did produce some California lithographs, but few are known to exist. His last work was a large geological map of the world. |
