This 9.5" x 7.5" (24.13 x 19.05 cm) photograph shows Lillian Jones, benefactor of the Lillian Jones Museum in Jackson County, Ohio. Jones's great-grandfather, Thomas Jones, came from Wales in 1838 with his family. He settled in southern Jackson County, where he worked in the local coal and iron industry. Thomas became president of Jefferson Furnace and later Globe Iron. Lillian's grandfather, Eben Jones, was also involved in the furnace industry in the county and her father, Edwin Jones, was a prominent Jackson County businessman involved in mining, foundry, iron, and other interests. He also built of the Cambrian hotel, a Jackson landmark. Lillian Jones (1893-1991) studied at the Indianapolis School for Girls and in France. She traveled around the world four times, and lived, for a short time, in New York City before returning to Jackson to care for her mother. She never married. Upon her death, she left her home and its contents as a museum and cultural center for Jackson. The museum opened on December 9, 1995. |
