Description |
This statue stood in a niche in the original Josephinum building on the corner of Friend St (now Main St.) and 18th Street in Columbus. It depicts St. Joseph, patron of the Josephinum, holding the Christ Child. The statue stands 5 feet (1.52 meters) high. In 1877 Father John Joseph Jessing received permission from Bishop Sylvester Rosecrans to establish what eventually became the Josephinum in Columbus. Jessing, a German immigrant, had established an orphanage in Pomeroy that he funded through the publication of the Ohio Waisenfreund (Ohio Orphans' Friend), a German language newspaper, but felt that he could accomplish more in a larger city. The institution was originally located at 831 East Main, then known as Friend Street, at the corner of 18th Street. Jessing started various trade opportunities for the orphans including the Josephinum Church Furniture Company. In 1888, he started the Collegium Josephinum to train young men for the priesthood and to minister primarily to German-speaking immigrants. |
