HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Ulysses S. Grant was the eighteenth president of the United States. He was born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1839 where he graduated in 1843. He was first stationed near St. Louis, Missouri where he met Julia Boggs Dent, whom he later married in 1848.
During the Mexican War ( 1846- 1848) he served under General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott. He then served at Fort Vancouver, Oregon and Fort Humboldt, California until 1854 when he resigned from the Army. He began to farm in Missouri and entered into real estate in St. Louis, but failed in both. In 1860 he moved to Galena, Illinois to join his father and brothers in a leather goods business.
At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 he helped recruit, equip, and drill troops in Galena and then accompanied them to Springfield, where he was appointed an aide and assigned to the state Adjutant General's office. He soon was appointed Brigadier General and gained command of the District of Southeast Missouri. In 1862 he won the first major Union victory of the war when Fort Donelson, on the Cumberland River in Tennessee, surendered with about 15,000 P 397

troops. In March 1864, Grant was appointed Lieutenant General and was given command over all the armies of the United States. On April 2, 1865, Lee surrendered at Appomattox. In 1866 Grant was appointed General of the Armies of the United States, and in 1867 President Andrew Johnson named him Secretary of War.
Grant was nominated the Republican candidate for president in 1868, and was elected by a small margin. In 1872 he won reelection with a large majority of votes over Horace Greeley. When
he did not get a third nomination for president he moved to New York City and entered an investment firm. He put his capital at the disposal of the firm and encouraged others to follow. In 1884 the firm collapsed, and he went into bankruptcy. He was restored to the rank of general in 1885 only a few months before he died. Shortly before he died he composed two volumes of personal recollections of the Civil War. The royalties from these memoirs ultimately brought the Grant family nearly $ 450,000 after he had died on July 23, 1885.
