Harold
Bateson
was
born
in
Mermill
,
Ohio
and
graduated
from
Liberty
High
School
in
1943
. He
recalls
listening
to the
accounts
of the
Pearl
Harbor
attack
with his
father
, and,
later
, to
President
Roosevelt's
declaration
of
war
over
the
PA
system
at
school
.
After
graduating
high
school
, he
joined
the
Marines
and was
sent
to
San
Diego
fro
training
.
Before
leaving
for
California
,
Mr
.
Bateson
had
married
his
high
school
sweetheart
,
Betty
.
While
he was in
Guam
, he
got
a
letter
from her
saying
that his
brother
had been
killed
and was
buried
in
Guam
.
So
he
found
the
grave
and
sent
home
pictures
. From
Guam
,
Mr
.
Bateson
was
sent
to
Iwo
Jima
,
where
he was
part
of the
second
wave
of
Marines
in the
assault
. He has
very
fond
memories
of
another
Marine
,
Joe
Di
Falco
, from
Brooklyn
,
who
befriended
him
during
the
trip
to
Iwo
Jima
.
Sadly
,
Di
Falco
was
killed
by a
Japanese
grenade
as he and
Bateson
were
sharing
a
fox
hole
.
After
Iwo
,
Mr
.
Bateson
returned
to
Guam
and was
promoted
to
Corporal
, as a
cook's
assistant
. The
3rd
Division
was
,within
hours
, of
leaving
for the
invasion
of
Japan
when
the US
dropped
the
atomic
bombs
,
ending
the
war
.
During
the
interview
,
Mr
.
Bateson
describes
the
people
who
lived
on
Guam
, and the
conditions
for
troops
.
John
