made
in
approximately
1835
and
is
attributed
to the
James
and
Ralph
Clews
pottery
in
Cobridge
,
England
. The
picture
on the
dish
depicts
a
scene
near
Chillicothe
,
Ohio
. A
winding
road
appears
from the
foreground
to the
middle
of the
picture
and
across
to the
right
. A
two-story
house
sits
at the
base
of a
hill
. The
background
shows
a
gradual
hill
with a
fence
and
trees
. There are
three
cows
in the
center
foreground
of the
picture
. This
is
the
only
whiteware
soap
dish
known
in this
pattern
,
according
to
curator
Doug
White
.
James
and
Ralph
Clews
were the
principal
members
of the
pottery
firm
bearing
their
name
. This
pottery
produced
creamware
and
earthenware
from
1819-1836
in
Cobridge
,
England
, in the
Staffordshire
region
.
James
Clews
attempted
to
develop
a
pottery
in
Troy
,
Indiana
, but
gave
up
and
returned
to
England
,
where
he
retired
as a
potter
.
