Clay floor tile was made by the American Encaustic Tile Company in Zanesville, Ohio, around 1890. This art-pottery tile is square and has an oak-leaf design in brown, white, yellow, blue and rust. The ceramic tile was made from a cast and is marked on the reverse with the following text: "The American/Encaustic Tile Co/Limited" and impressed "25A." Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Lyon of Columbus, Ohio, donated this floor tile to the Ohio Historical Society in 1988.; The American Encaustic Tiling Company (Aetco) was founded in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1876.
