Ex -Sheriff Fred Bolte died at h�home at Graytown Saturday morning, Feb. 21st, aged 73 years, six months and one day. He was born at Hanover, Germany and came to thi3 country .shortly after he had mastered his , trade, a blacksmith. He worked for a ! time in different cities but Anally went' i into business for himself at Graytown. The character of his work brought im¬ mediate success and he had all the work he could do and had to hire extra help. Grajtown wa? then the center of the sawmill business and he com¬ bined the trade of machinist with the trade he had mastered and was soon in big demand at every mill. After the timber was gone he built a hotel that at once become popular with traveling men. He bad faith in the land and he bonght several farms and sold them to an advantage. He and the Frese broth¬ ers and Judge Hammond built the Graytown elevator which prospered from the start. He sold his interest in this plaut to the Co Operative Oo.
He was a sterling Democrat and was elected to offices in Benton township aud in 1891 he was elected Sheriff of this county. He made a record that stands for efficiency in that office. He was as game as they make them and at that time he was physically able to cope with a half dozen ordinary men. He had a legion of friends and for any of them he would go the limit, The natural sympathies of this man went out to all, and shortly before he retired from office he said that of all tbe crim¬ inals he bad in charge there was but one for whom he did not sympathize, and that fellow was convicted of a crime and he was constantly trying to arouse a mutiny among other prisoners. Take him all in all he was one of God's noble men and a gentleman at all times, The county has loat a good citizen and it will be hard to replace him, Si~ 5 7~/^St S~
He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Louise B. Eoff. two sons, 0harie3 of Chicago and Otto of Graytown, three grand-children, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Diekman, of Cleveland, and Mrs. Cornelius of Bay township.
The funeral was held Monday after¬ noon from the late residence, The body was was laid to rest in the Ellis- ton cemetery.
