The character of his work brought im¬
mediate success and he had all the
work he could do and had to hire extra
help. Grajtown wa? then the center
of the sawmill business and he com¬
bined the trade of machinist with the
trade he had mastered and was soon in
big demand at every mill. After the
timber was gone he built a hotel that
at once become popular with traveling
men. He bad faith in the land and he

from the start. He sold his interest in
this plaut to the Co Operative Oo.
He was a sterling Democrat and was
elected to offices in Benton township
aud in 1891 he was elected Sheriff of
this county. He made a record that
stands for efficiency in that office. He
was as game as they make them and
at that time he was physically able to
cope with a half dozen ordinary men.
He had a legion of friends and for any
of them he would go the limit, The
natural sympathies of this man went
out to all, and shortly before he retired
from office he said that of all tbe crim¬
inals he bad in charge there was but
one for whom he did not sympathize,
and that fellow was convicted of a
crime and he was constantly trying to
arouse a mutiny among other prisoners.
Take him all in all he was one of God's
noble men and a gentleman at all
times, The county has loat a good
