ABOOT DOTY DEATH

Kenneth E. Doty, 43-year-old
sFeamfitter, of 19 Sherwood Foi-
est, was killed instantly about 2
o'clock yesterday (July 18) at th«
Shell Oil Company's Wood River
refinery at Roxana, in an'explo¬
sion evidently touched off by a
spark from a welder's torch.
Mr. Doty was working* on to:>
of a new tank which was b^ing
prepared to hold * asphalt, while a
welder, Alvis Dilbach, worked on
the side.
A sudden explosion blew the
top off the tank, shooting Mr.
Doty 35 feet from the tank, ana
killing him instantly. The tank
caught fire, but the flames wrer<?
brought under control. Dilbach
was treated for bruises at Wooct
River Township hospital.
Officials said the explosion prob¬
ably started when escaping turner
were ignited by a spark from Dil-
mach's torch.
Mr. Doty has been engaged in
construction work since 1941, ac¬
cording to his wife, and had work¬
ed for the Illinois Power Company
since last summer, until taking the
job with the Flour Corporation, or
Los Angeles, on the Wood Riv,or
project several months ago.
Mr. Doty is survived by his wife
the former Anna E. Diegei, who'-i
he married at Elliston, Ohio,
Sept. 17, 1932, and two children,
Joyce 16, and Charles 13.
Born at Canton, Ohio, April la,
1907, Mr. Doty was the son oi
Charles M. Doty, of Elmore, O.,
and the late Nellie Hopkins Doty.
He was a member of St. Paul's
Evangelical and Reformed Church,
Belleville Lodge of the Loyal Or¬
der of tfhe Moose,—the Wood Ri¬
ver Sportsmen's Club, the St.
Clair. County Anglers' Associa¬
tion, Steamfitters* Local No. 553
of Alton, the Commodore Heights
Organization, and was an officer
in the Boy Scouts.
Funeral services (were) held
Friday, July 21, from the Guna-
lach and Company chapel, Rev.
B. J. Koehler officiating, with in¬
terment in Mount Hope cemetery.
