Description |
Portrait of Matilda Dunbar, mother of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, ca. 1890-1910. Matilda was born a slave in Fayette County, Kentucky. She instilled in her son Paul a love of poetry. During her life, she worked as a washerwoman to support her family. Among her customers were the family of Orville and Wilbur Wright. Matilda died in Dayton, Ohio, on February 24, 1934. |
