"THE WHISKEY CRUSADE, IN OHIO. THIS movement was inaugurated in Mount Vernon by Dr. Dio Lewis. [Feb. 16th. 1874] A daily Prayer Meeting was held in all the Churches, after which the Ladies in bands of about one hundred visited the various Saloons singing and praying at each and requesting the proprietors to desist from the sale of Liquor. Great success attended them for the first few weeks, and all were closed except five: these were obdurate, and the Ladies decided to keep guard at their places of business constantly; this was done in Military style regular reliefs being formed, - commencing at daylight each party being on duty two hours, taking the names of all that entered, expostulating with them on thier course. The energy and perseverance in all weather, displayed by these Ladies was remarkable."
