. The
monument
to the
regiment's
service
in the
battle
and the
Chattanooga
campaign
is
located
near
the
Widow
Glenn's
house
. The
battle
of
Chickamauga
was
fought
September
19
and
20
,
1862
,
ten
miles
south
of
Chattanooga
,
Tennessee
,
near
the
banks
of the
Chickamauga
River
. The
Union
forces
were
commanded
by
General
Rosecrans
and the
Confederate
forces
commanded
by
General
Bragg
. At the
time
of the
battle
, the
regiment
was
assigned
to
headquarters
and
performed
escort
and
other
provost
duties
.
Significantly
, the
regiment
was
located
at
McFarland's
Gap
when
Longstreet's
attack
sent
Union
divisions
streaming
north
and
west
. At the
gap
, the
regiment
served
to
collect
and
organize
retreating
troops
from the
broken
commands
. The
10th
Ohio
was
organized
in
June
,
1861
to
serve
3
years
and was
subsequently
mustered
out
of
service
in
June
,
1864
. The
regiment
served
in
numerous
skirmishes
and
battles
. Its
hardest
losses
were at
Perryville
on
October
2nd
of
1862
when
the
regiment
made
a
desperate
charge
to
prevent
from
being
overwhelmed
. In
retiring
"its
track
was
marked
by the
dead
of the
regiment.
"
Half
of the
10th's
528
men
were
killed
,
wounded
, or
missing
that
day
.
Following
the
creation
of a
national
park
including
the
Chickamauga
Battlefield
, the
Ohio
General
Assembly
passed
an
act
to
provide
monuments
and
tablets
to
mark
the
positions
of
Ohio
troops
during
the
battle
. The
legislation
was
enacted
May
1891
and
commissioners
were
appointed
for the
task
. In
all
55
monuments
were
contracted
(see
page
140
and
141)
. The
monuments
were
dedicated
September
18,1895
.
