Caption: Chickamauga Battlefield sketched by J.G. McElroy of the Ohio Commission, Late Captain 18th Ohio Infantry 1895. The Great Seal of the State of Ohio lies below. Made in 1895, this map includes Ohio monuments and tablet markers in relation to strategic movements of the Confederate and Union forces on September 18 and 19, 1863. The battle pitted the Union's Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General William Rosecrans of Ohio, against the Confederate's Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Braxton Bragg. The Northern army numbered approximately sixty thousand men, while the Confederates had forty-three thousand soldiers. Major General William S. Rosecrans from Delaware County, Ohio commanded the Army of the Cumberland. |
