Description	In 1792, President George Washington appointed Anthony Wayne as the commander of the United States Army of the Northwest, then currently serving in the Northwest Territory. The major purpose of this army was to defend American settlers from Indian attack. Wayne's army constructed Fort Greene Ville in late 1793, now Greenville, Ohio, and stayed there through the winter. In late summer 1794 Wayne moved towards the Maumee River, fighting with the Indians in an area known as Fallen Timbers. On August 20, 1794, Wayne's army defeated the Indians at what would become known as the Battle of Fallen Timbers. This battle lead to the Treaty of Greenville, signed on August 3, 1795, in which area tribes relinquished control of much of modern day Ohio.
