Description |
This painting of Wellington, Ohio resident Hugh Moser was painted by Archibald Willard around 1890. Moser, a Civil War veteran and friend of Willard, appears in a costume he wore in Wellington's 1876 Fourth of July parade. In celebration of the centennial, Willard painted his famous Spirit of '76 painting that included Moser. This portrait of Moser is based on that work and was created around 1890. The painting measures 57" x 36" (144.78 x 91.44 cm). Archibald Willard (1836-1918) was born in Bedford, Ohio in 1836. His family moved to Wellington, Ohio in the 1850s. Although he had little formal training as an artist, Willard worked for a carriage maker, painting pictures on finished carriages. After serving in the Civil War, his work came to the attention of a Cleveland art retailer who marketed his work. He is best known for his painting The Spirit of '76. |
