Cox
ran
for the
presidency
in
1920
against
another
Ohioan
,
Warren
G
.
Harding
of
Marion
.
When
the
votes
were
tallied
,
Harding
proved
victorious
,
garnering
404
electoral
votes
to
Cox's
127
.
Harding
was also
victorious
within
the
state
of
Ohio
,
receiving
58%
of the
popular
vote
.
Franklin
D
.
Roosevelt
,
Cox's
running
mate
,
became
the
32nd
president
of the
United
States
and
served
four
terms
(1933-1945)
.
James
Middleton
Cox
(1870-1957)
was
born
near
Jacksonburg
,
Butler
County
,
Ohio
. He
left
school
at the
age
of
16
and
later
taught
at a
school
near
Middletown
. In the
following
years
Cox
became
interested
in the
newspaper
business
and
purchased
what would
become
the
Dayton
Daily
News
in
1898
. As
Cox's
newspaper
business
grew
,
so
did
his
interest
in
local
politics
. He
earned
a
seat
in the
United
States
House
of
Representatives
serving
the
3rd
district
from
1909
to
1913
.
Cox
was also
elected
governor
of
Ohio
in
1913
and
served
until
1915
. He was
elected
a
second
time
in
1917
and
served
until
1921
.
After
losing
the
presidential
election
of
1920
,
Cox
never
ran
for
public
office
again
, but he
did
remain
close
friends
with
Roosevelt
.
Through
the
years
between
1920
and
Roosevelt's
death
in
1945
the
two
exchanged
personal
letters
,
telegraphs
, and
pictures
on a
regular
basis
.
