on the

below
it
. The
portrait
measures

Caroline
L
.
Ormes
Ransom
(1838-1910)
was a
good
friend
of the
Garfield's
and
among
the
first
successful
American
female
portrait
artists
,
due
in
part
to the
Garfield's
patronage
.
Born
in
Newark
,
Ohio
, she
studied
art
in
New
York
and
Munich
before
returning
to
Cleveland
in
1860
.
Two
portraits
of
abolitionist
Joshua
R
.
Giddings
(1867)
and
General
George
H
.
Thomas
(1875)
,
respectively
, were
commissioned
by
Congress
and
hung
in the
Capitol
.
Ransom
also was
one
of the
founders
of the
Daughters
of the
American
Revolution
. She
never
married
.
Ransom
died
in
Washington
,
D.C
.
where
she
lived
from
1884
to her
death
in
1910
. She
is
buried
in
Cleveland's
Lake
View
Cemetery
.

to

,
1881
.
Before
beginning
his
political
career
,
Garfield
was a
student
at the
Western
Reserve
Eclectic
Institute
(1852-1854)
,
teacher
of
ancient
languages
(1853
,
1856-1861)
,
principal
(1857-1863)
, and
trustee
(1864-1881)
.
Born
in
Cuyahoga
County
,
Ohio
,
Garfield
was the
youngest
of
five
children
.
Garfield's
father
died
when
he was
two
, and his
family
was
left
poverty-stricken
. As a
teenager
,
Garfield
worked
on a
canal
boat
.
Education
was
important
to him,
so
he
set
out
to
enroll
in the
Western
Reserve
Eclectic
Institute
(now
Hiram
College)
.
Garfield
then
went
to
Williams
College
before
returning
to
Hiram
to
teach
at the
institute
.
After
a
lengthy
courtship
,
Garfield
married
Lucretia
Rudolph
(1832-1918)
in
1858
.
Lucretia
was the
daughter
of
Zeb
Rudolph
, a
devoted
member
of the
Disciples
of
Christ
and
one
of the
founders
of the
Institute
.
