.
James
W
.
Denver
(1817-1892)
was
born
in
Virginia
but
came
to
Ohio
with his
family
in
1831
. He
left
Ohio
for a
time
and
taught
school
in
Platte
City
,
Missouri
.
Returning
to
Ohio
, he
enrolled
in the
Cincinnati
Law
School
in
1844
and
earned
his
degree
. By
1846
,
Denver
had
moved
to
Xenia
,
where
he
published
a
newspaper
and
practiced
law
.
Both
of these
ventures
were
unsuccessful
and he
returned
to
Missouri
.
During
the
Mexican
War
,
Denver
raised
a
company
of
men
for the
12th
U
.
S
.
Volunteer
Infantry
and was
commissioned
as a
captain
.
After
recovering
from
yellow
fever
,
which
he
contracted
in
Mexico
,
Denver
moved
to
California
,
where
he
prospected
for
gold
,
opened
a
trading
post
, and
became
involved
in
politics
.
During
the
1850s
, he
served
as a
state
senator
,
California
secretary
of
state
, and
U
.
S
.
congressman
.
James
Buchanan
appointed
Denver
U
.
S
.
commissioner
of
Indian
Affairs
in
1857
. He
encouraged
small
,
separate
land
reserves
for
various
American
Indian
tribes
at a
time
when
popular
opinion
called
for
all
tribes
to be
resettled
on
one
large
plot
of
land
.
Later
the
same
year
,
Denver
was
appointed
acting
governor
of the
Kansas
Territory
.
During
this
time
, the
city
of
Denver
,
Colorado
was
named
in his
honor
.
Denver
was
commissioned
a
brigadier
general
of
volunteer
troops
in
Kansas
during
the
Civil
War
and
served
under
the
command
of
Ulysses
S
.
Grant
until
resigning
in
1863
. He
established
a
law
firm
in
Washington
D.C
. and
remained
active
in
politics
. His
name
was
mentioned
as a
possible
presidential
candidate
in
1876
and
1884
, but an
1852
duel
in
which
he had
killed
his
opponent
most
likely
cost
him the
nomination
.
General
Denver
married
Louise
Rombach
in
1856
. Their
permanent
home
was
149
E
.
Locust
Street
in
Wilmington
,
which
became
the
location
of the
Clinton
County
Historical
Society's
Rombach
Place
Museum
.
