Description
This
photograph
shows
the
residence
of
John
Foos
,
located
at the
northeast
corner
of
High
and
Sycamore
streets
(now
810
East
High
Street)
in
Springfield
,
Ohio
. The
John
Foos
Manor
was
built
in
1870
and
is
an
example
of
High
Victorian
Italianate
architecture
. The
house
was a
showplace
with
hand-carved
walnut
woodwork
; a
winding
,
three-story
staircase
leading
to the
third-floor
ballroom
; a
mosaic
of
Italian
tile
in the
entry
hall
; a
music
room
boasting
an
original
mirror
measuring
5
feet
wide
and
over
9
feet
high
; and
five
guest
bedrooms
on the
second
floor
.
Foos
came
to
Springfield
from
Madison
County
,
Ohio
in
1848
. His
uncle
,
Griffith
Foos
, was
one
of the
city's
founders
and
built
the
first
structure
after
the
city
was
platted
in
1801
, the
Foos
Tavern
.
John
Foos
started
in the
mercantile
business
and then
purchased
several
mills
in the
early
1860s
. He
ran
these in
conjunction
with the
Cottage
Paint
Company
,
established
in
1865
,
until
the
1890s
.
Ever
busy
, in
1870
Foos
joined
P
.
P
.
Mast
to
form
Mast
,
Foos
&
Co.
,
manufacturers
of
agricultural
equipment
. He and
Mast
also
used
their
resources
to
establish
the
Springfield
National
Bank
in
1881
.
Another
of
Foos's
projects
was the
organization
of the
St
.
John
Sewing
Machine
Company
in
1875
for the
manufacture
of a
sewing
machine
invented
by
St
.
John
of
Bellefontaine
,
Ohio
.
Foos
is
probably
best
known
for the
Foos
Gas
Engine
.
Although
Foos
held
the
patent
(U.S
.
Patent
No
.
494,134
of
March
28
,
1893)
on this
early
gasoline
engine
, the
design
was the
product
of the
work
of
Clark
Sintz
and
Charles
F
.
Endter
. The
Foos
Gas
Engine
Company
was
incorporated
in
1897
with
Foos
as
president
and his
son-in-law
Scipio
E
.
Baker
as
vice-president
. The
company
manufactured
engines
under
this
name
until
1927
,
when
it
was
sold
to
Fulton
Iron
Works
of
St
.
Louis
,
Missouri
. At this
time
, the
company
president
was
Foos's
son
,
George
.
John
Foos
had
died
in
1908
and
Scipio
Baker
in
1921
. The
Foos
Division
of
Fulton
continued
to
manufacture
in
Springfield
until
1942
,
when
all
operations
were
transferred
to
St
.
Louis
. This
photograph
is
from the
book
,
Springfield
Illustrated
,
which
provides
a
written
and
photographic
profile
of the
city
. The
photographs
include
residences
of
prominent
citizens
,
schools
,
churches
,
businesses
, and
street
views
. The
book
is

pages
and
