it

his
death
.
It
was
moved
several
times
before
being
placed
on the
grounds
of the
Madison
County
Historical
Society
.
Alder
was
born
in
New
Jersey
and
moved
to
Wythe
County
,
Virginia
with his
family
while
a
young
boy
. In
1781
,
Jonathan
and his
brother
David
were
taken
captive
by
American
Indians
.
David
was
killed
, but
Jonathan
was
adopted
by
chief
Succohanos
and his
wife
Winecheoh
of the
Mingo
tribe
and
lived
with them
until
1795
.
Alder
married
a
American
Indian
woman
and
settled
along
Big
Darby
Creek
near
what would
later
become
Plain
City
.
After
whites
began
to
settle
in the
area
,
Alder
became
reacquainted
with
European
ways
. His
first
wife
later
rejoined
her
tribe
. In
1805
,
Alder
traveled
to
Virginia
where
he
reunited
with his
mother
and
siblings
,
who
moved
to
Madison
County
to
settle
near
him. A
year
later
he
married
a
white
woman
,
Mary
Blont
,
built
a
log
cabin
, and
became
a
farmer
.
Throughout
his
life
,
Alder
defended
the
American
Indians
,
who
considered
him a
friend
, and
cited
repeated
attacks
by
whites
as
cause
for
animosity
and
retaliation
.
