Josephine
Schwarz
(b
.
1907)
was
born
in
Dayton
,
Ohio
and
began
studying
ballet
at the
age
of
eight
.
While
in
high
school
, she
went
to
Chicago
to
study
under
Adolph
Bohm
and
Alexandra
Maximova
.
During
that
time
, she
danced
with the
Ravinia
Grand
Opera
Ballet
in
Chicago
and was
asked
to
join
the
company
, but
chose
to
return
to
Dayton
instead
.
Upon
returning
home
, she
finished
high
school
and then
opened
the
Schwarz
School
of
Dance
with her
sister
,
Hermene
(1902-1986)
.
Schwarz
studied
modern
dance
in
Europe
and, in
1934
,
joined
the
school
of
American
Ballet
in
New
York
where
she
studied
under
George
Ballenchine
. Her
professional
dance
performance
career
ended
in
1937
when
she
suffered
a
knee
injury
. She then
returned
to the
Schwarz
School
of
Dance
in
Dayton
to
resume
her
teaching
career
. The
Schwarz
sisters
founded
the
Experimental
Group
for
Young
Dancers
in
1937
, and
Schwarz
incorporated
both
ballet
and
modern
dance
styles
in her
choreography
. This
early
group
went
through
several
name
changes
before
it
finally
developed
into the
Dayton
Ballet
Company
in the
early
1950s
. The
company
, the
second
oldest
regional
ballet
company
in the
United
States
,
maintained
a
reputation
as
one
of the
finest
regional
ballet
organizations
and
is
a
leader
in the
regional
ballet
movement
through
the
twentieth
century
.
Schwarz
students
have
gone
on to
dance
in
some
of the
most
prestigious
dance
companies
in the
country
, and
Schwarz
herself
has
earned
a
place
as
one
of the "
grand
dames
" of the
dance
world
.
