This
amputating
kit
,
manufactured
by
Jacob
H
.
Gemrig
of
Philadelphia
, was
used
by
Dr
.
Lewis
Coy
(1848-1921)
in the
Youngstown
area
.
It
is
typical
of
surgical
tools
used
during
the
nineteenth
century
.
Inside
the
2
by
16
by
20-inch
(5.08
by
40.64
by
50.80
cm)
velvet-lined
mahogany
case
are
two
Petit's
tourniquets
,
two
trephines
(used
for
boring
holes
into
bone
,
particularly
the
skull)
, a
large
amputation
saw
,
two
long
amputating
knives
, a
bone
saw
,
two
Hey's
skull
saws
, and a
tenaculum
(a
hook-like
instrument
for
seizing
and
holding
parts)
. The
tools
are
made
of
stainless
steel
with
hard
rubber
handles
.
Lewis
Coy
was
born
in
Green
Village
,
Mahoning
County
. He
served
in the
6th
Ohio
Volunteer
Cavalry
during
the
Civil
War
.
After
the
war
,
Coy
studied
medicine
with a
local
doctor
, then at the
Eclectic
Medical
Institute
in
Cincinnati
,
graduating
in
1876
. He
began
practicing
medicine
in his
home
town
, but in
1879
moved
to
Canfield
, a
suburb
of
Youngstown
.
Coy
served
as
physician
at the
Mahoning
County
Infirmary
for
thirty
years
.
Jacob
H
.
Gemrig
,
who
made
the
surgical
tools
, was
born
in
Germany
and
emigrated
to
Philadelphia
in the
1830s
. In
1844
he
established
one
of the
country's
first
medical
instrument-making
companies
. The
Union
army
purchased
many
of his
amputating
kits
during
the
Civil
War
. His
products
were
known
for their
quality
craftsmanship
.
